wall art/decor and sofa table help pls

last month

I could use your wonderful advice and suggestions.. again 🤪
I would love some help decorating my living room… specifically if a sofa table would be best here behind the sofa. It’s the first thing you see when you come in the front door. We can push the sofa closer to the fireplace so I think theres enough room. But I don’t want it to look too busy. Thoughts?
Also, I can figure out what to put on these 2 walls with the purple markings. Above the bench I thought of doing a photo gallery I had up in our last house. But then just a big piece of art on the wall next to the slider? Any other ideas? Thanks!!!

The second photo, with purple highlighter lines, is an interference. Based on what I see the rug is not the correct size and the sectional is too far away from the fireplace.

In the mean time, do not paint those areas. If you want a break from all the wood walls, add drapery panels on windows on either side of fireplace.

Are you interested in new furniture? New rug? New layout?

It's so helpful when you post images that DON'T have your marks on them so we can superimpose art on your walls.

The slope on the sectional is too slanted to then place a console table behind it and expect it to look good. Actually that sectional is not a benefit to that room.

The sectional is all wrong for thta space The are where you have the first purple box is where I would put the TV on a noce stand and face a sofa for viewing .and a couple of chairs but I need a to scale floor plan please

I meant to attach other photos but we’re working on our kitchen and forgot! Thx!

Unfortunately the TV doesn’t fit on any of the walls. And we definitely need a new sectional! We moved in earlier this year and haven’t gotten around to it. Thx!

! What an amazing fireplace !
Working with the pieces you have ..
Can you turn the rug the other way and bring the sectional a little closer to the fireplace ? On the wall by the slider - would you use a credenza or table ? Do you need storage ? Can you could try the bench on the wall next to the slider ? ( where is it most helpful to have a bench ? ) and try big art above it ? Is there room in the corner to the left of the fireplace to use the ratan chair and lamp as a reading area ? It might balance the TV on the right side . Can you darken the color of the blinds to blend with the wood on both sides of the fireplace and blend the curtains a bit too ? Do you have another coffee table and tv table that match the style of your bench to tie the room together ?
I see lots of great options ! Hope you have some help to move things around .

PS - the style of your small end table next to the sectional goes great with the fireplace

The stone fireplace is quite something. You don't want to consider placing the TV over the hearth?

So many good questions w93639! We could turn the rug and bring the sectional closer. Our dog’s bed is usually at the end. But there could be room. It definitely should be wider! We don’t really need storage but I’m open to a table. Or maybe plant stands with art above? Or possibly a narrow arched cabinet? But we don’t really need it. Floating shelves? I could move the bench there. Either spot works! We definitely need a new sectional. And would love a comfy chair for the corner. Right now, our pup likes to look out the window from that chair 🤪 and our Christmas tree will go there shortly! There won’t be any window treatments on those little windows. And the big windows opposite the slider will have the same curtains as the other side. Happy to hear ideas!!! Thank you!

Beverly, we are open to it! But it’s just such an amazing fireplace, I almost hate to cover it up. Plus we use it a lot and it’s wood burning! But there’s really no other wall to fit it on… I just have these other walls I don’t know what to do. And actually there’s one more 🤪 this is looking back toward the front door. That wall behind the couch I need to figure out too. The room looks a little stretched in my photos. I did wide angle to fit more but it skews the pics a bit.
    Thank you for any advice!

I thought about something like this….. thoughts?

This is the photo gallery I had at our last house.. was thinking of doing that here. But not sure!

  • last month

That would work well on the wall above the bench - it may be a little tricky with the vent and the thermostat , but it could be easier than a bigger single piece of art .
Both your other walls will look great with larger art on them .
PS IMO real life , dogs and TVs , always come before “proper decorating “ and great design includes our pets and hobbies and family time .

Picture ledges provide an organized appearance and you can always add to them.

Not a pro... to me your TV is fine where you have it. What I don't like is the white console under it. I think it would look much better with a darker wood, or even black console. Also maybe the shelving unit you showed or something with some height or weight on the other side of the fireplace to balance out the TV would help.

  • last month

Thanks! Good idea about balancing the TV. I hadn’t thought about something tall over there.
Only thing is re: the TV console is that the room already is very brown and I liked the idea of adding some white/light pieces. But also like the idea to add black elements as well. The white piece was in another room in our last house and it was out there as temporary stand for TV so I’m definitely open to something else.. I’ll look. Thank you!

And maybe the pros on here will have some ideas for you.

You might want to consider a TV easel so that the TV can be moved around when needed.

  • last month

Why can't the current TV go on the wall next to the slider? That would open up the right window next to the fireplace.

While you want to have art, throws, rug in light, warm colors, avoid stark white against all that wood. Ivory and warm, orange/gold reds are a better choice. Note the ivory sofa, chair and rug patterns. Go in that direction. The room could use a couple sit-by-the-fire armchairs--maybe modern wingback?

Thank you Beverly and HouseGal. Unfortunately the TV doesn’t fit on that wall… that was my first thought before we bought the house!

  • last month

Okay, so the TV doesn't fit the wall. It's blasphemous to say so on Houzz, but what about getting a smaller TV that does fit on a nice wood credenza?

If the TV must stay, then get a built-in cabinet same finish as the pine under the window, and some kind of angle arrangement for the current TV. I'd suggest a matching cabinet on the other side, but the if your dog likes the chair, then keep the chair there.

Again, whatever couch you get, look for warm neutral or golds pulled from some of the lighter fireplace stones with a coordinating rug, patterned armchair(s). This is a good layout for you, too, if you don't want another sectional.

Thanks housegal! Appreciate all the ideas and suggestions. I don’t think we are going smaller with the TV… we’re getting older so the Tv can’t get smaller 🤣
But will definitely work on improving our room based on all the suggestions!
And tozmo, we could do that. It doesn’t really fit on the wall.. but on an angle it would. So then it would just be floating with no table? Thx!

  • last month

Yes, it just floats on an angle. I have one I use like that. The actual mount would be on that wall beside the door but the mounting frame that affixes to the wall is smaller than the TV so it should fit. If the door on the left is not operable, you could push the TV back against that wall and cover the door frame slightly and the TV will be covered by the curtain when you're not using it, but you wouldn't have to. Pushing it back when not in use would reduce the load at the wall but if it's installed correctly, the mount should bear the load in any position. Make sure you get a mount that meets the size and load requirements of your TV. This was a solution recommended by my interior designer as I had no place to put the TV and didn't want it over the fireplace.

    Thanks! I’ll look into that!

Hi all, thank you for your great feedback! I’m starting to work on some changes. And have a quick question…. For the space where the round sign is, I’m thinking about getting an arched cabinet and a matching one for opposite the TV on the other side of the fireplace. I’m trying to bring in some black accents so planning to get black. Any thoughts of preference btw these 2? Or an open shelving unit with arched top maybe? I mocked up the 2 that I like. Thoughts/preferences? Thanks!!
