What to do with this 2nd floor landing space?

last month

Hi we previously had a small sectional in here and my son took it for his apt. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with this space- we already have 3 sitting rooms so we don’t need another sofa but it would look nice lol see inspiration pics below. I also thought of just a center table with an floral arrangement and maybe 2 smaller chairs by the windows? But am not sure. Or a few club chairs which I’m not a huge fan of. Any thoughts are appreciated!! (Hallway to the left and stairs entering where I’m standing to take picture. plain wall with a bedroom door to the right.)

Agree with Lyn. you already have three ”sitting rooms”, I’d use it for some other purpose, depending upon your needs/wants.

Lyn and K, Thank you for the advice! we do have our guest room right off of that area so it’s a nice space to extend to guests 💙 I agree there’s

no need for another sitting area. thx again!!

In love the center table idea and maybe a couple of cahirs for guests to have a morning coffee without disturbing anyone. My guests love the coffee maker in the guest room.

Am liking the idea of a library with window seating. Would be a great place for reading.

Nice rug, center table. That's all. You have no need for another sitting space so don't make one.

It is so easy to assign needless purposes to a space just to fill them. But you are in the envious position of making a space look simply magazine beautiful. How many people have the room to do just this? Not many. Enjoy selecting items simply because they are beautiful and you will enjoy seeing them as you pass by.

No to turning your home into a Hampton Inn with coffee station for guests.

A dual purpose room in which you would love to spend time in, but so would guests. Imagine the fire lit, chairs by fireplace, a rug, chaise by window to read, and drapes to make room cozier. Bookcase and include interesting items and improve the fireplace‘s decor. Lighting will be key as well.

What might you want or need in your home that you don't already have? You could do a home office, a game room, a reading room, a play room, a movie theater, etc. Below are just two images from a clients home we designed. Please note the game area, bar area, and home office.

I'd put a 24 x60 very open desk in front of the window , add a pair of lamps, and a pretty chair or even two.

Lay down an area rug, buy a couple inexpensive swivel chairs for the fire, and call it a day.: )

When you have quests? There's nothing wrong with a Keurig on that desk, a basket of muffins, Mugs and whatevers on a lovely tray. I sure as HELL would be thrilled: )

I see you have a very nice black brick fireplace and a great chess set. Perhaps adding a small chess game table with a pair of stylish chairs and an area rug would help anchor the room and create a cozy focal point.

Barbara, jan ,randy, maureen, norwood arch. patricia, lynn and Laurence- Thank you all so much! such great ideas! I am excited to start! now I know what direction to go and another room with a sofa is out. I love all the ideas from an elegant office space, to a guest area/coffee bar, library or game/chess room!- they would all work. And Kendrah the idea that it could be a space to just be pretty or editorial is exciting as it truly is an extra space. love! Thank you 💙

So glad to see all the great ideas flowing here! I’d be happy to connect virtually if you ever want to refine the design details or see the space pulled together with visuals. I’ve worked with clients remotely for years, so it’s always exciting to collaborate and bring ideas to life.
