Mudroom Help Needed!

I'd like ideas to improve our mudroom.

What can I do to spruce this space up?

It looks pretty functional. Add an attractive indoor outdoor patterned rug or custom floor cloth and a small bench to the left of your very nice built-in. Note painted interior door.

For me this is function first for sure I dislike aany open storage for coats and shoes but yours seems pretty well contained (of course maybe for pictures ) I find that cabinet a huge contrast to the white so maybe a different color for it like a soft blue or green maybe . Some art on the walls and a fun light fixture and yes to a rug

@Patricia Colwell Consulting @housegal200 Thank you both. I think a rug would be great. Would you do a runner or just a small one by the 2 doors (garage and back doors)

A runner and pendant lighting would make a difference. In addition, a bench would be handy where dog bed(?) is and maybe add family photos or art above. Keep the classic/warm feel you have going on.

Yes, a jute rug would be nice. I'd also consider a mirrored finish on the wall between the cabinet and the ledge. And as you've said, a bench (not a built-in one) or ottomans/footstools would also be useful. If there are no pets or very small children, I'd also consider a narrow, simple floor vase and tall dried flowers in the corner where the ledge is.

I like your natural color scheme and would like to continue to develop it.

@Tachch Thank you! Do you mean paint the wall the same color as the bench?

I don't suggest painting anything. I suggested a large frameless mirror on the wall to the left of the cabinet and placing a bench or ottoman underneath it. You could also cover the entire wall above the cabinet and to the left of it with slatted panels (thin slats in a light or medium tone). All while maintaining the color and texture of the wood.

And continue the design in natural tones - jute, dried flowers (you can use photo art with dried flowers) and the like.

Such a beautiful mudroom! I would start by adding a long runner, my recommendation is to look at ones that are easy to wash and extra durrable. Ruggable has some great options! Adding a sofa table or built in "charging stagion" with a built in dog area on the left side of the built ins will serve as a "drop all" space but also allow for pet space. Otherwise, you could add artwork, maybe stack three pieces or one vertical. Here are a few ideas for inspo if you went the built-in route!

I love the shelf over dog area idea! Smart use of space

Agree with the runner suggestion. Your nice space made me think of this mudroom.

Awesome that you’re investing in the mudroom, it’s one of the most used spaces and one of the most overlooked. The key here is being intentional think drop zone + storage + durability. Position a bench or cubbies near the entry so shoes and bags have a home, plus hooks at kid height for backpacks or outerwear. Flooring and wall treatments should be durable and easy to clean (porcelain tile, vinyl planks, or even sealed concrete), because mess happens.

For storage, a tall cabinet for seasonal gear and open shelves for everyday items keeps things organized. Good lighting (including task light near bench) and a mat or tray for wet shoes matter more than often assumed. Also, consider continuous materials or a consistent palette with adjacent rooms so the mudroom doesn’t feel like a “basement afterthought.”

Or, consider a decent size, washable entry mat to collect moisture upon entering and leaving the rest of the floor bare. Much easier to wash and dry a door rug than a long runner. Chances are you will need to clean floor whether you have a rug or runner. As for sprucing up, the mirror idea is great, but a fun wallpaper would add a lot of interest - perhaps something to reflect your household’s favorite outdoor activities.
