Buy several of the cardboard scratchers thst lay on the floor. Those feel much better than carpet or furniture. My Charley adored them. When I brought in a new one, he could not wait to rip.

The outdoor cat of my Dad’s that we adopted after he died, LOVED the quarter piece of oak firewood with bark. She would sleep with her head on it. We buried it with her.

Some cats are just horizontal scratchers, not vertical ones. Give them an abundance of horizontal options other than the carpet.

Cut pile vs loop will help prevent snags. Some cats want jute or cardboard others prefer carpet. Make sure they have a few designated scratching places with their preferred material.
