It's called a 'Can Light' because it's shaped like a tin can. It's also known as a surface mounted 'Downlight'.

My parents replaced the pendant with four recessed lights on a dimmer. Worked well. The table was centered with the square of the lights.

I think you are asking about recessed pot lights is that right ?
