It wasn't my 'neck of the woods' back in the day but I'm surprised there are any left down there with all the wholesale removal of them during the height of DED.

Giant elm trees are something else. So distinctive and elegant. Can’t believe the country used to be full of them. What a tragedy to have them disappear

The one pictured above is most likely a remnant of what used to be streets lined with big AE all over the twin cities.

I'm thinking it could've been the storm of 1965 that took down the two EA, right across the street from where I lived at the time. I do remember reports of Tornados in Golden Valley, Fridley and Mounds View at the time, but our area was said be straight line winds.

iirc: it was a short time after this storm that we started hearing about DED and seeing the city removing them after them spray painting a big blue X on the trunk marking them for removal

Bill, my growing up house was a old large farmhouse w/4 or 5 giant English elms on the side and also an American elm. All were lost around 1975 or so, except for 1 English elm that was somewhat set off from the others, and that lasted prb'ly 6 -7 more yrs until getting it. One of the English elms was 125 ft tall, the others nearly that tall.

Just took a trip down memory lane using google street view. ;-)

Maybe viewed a couple of elms around my old stomping grounds, though not sure, my blurry picture plant id skills are weak.

Left the twin cities spring of '76 and after my folks died, haven't been back.

I think I missed out on the Fraxinus exodus that occurred there (from ~2010 to date) because of that.

eta: There appeared to be many newer (30–40-year-old) maples and lindens and I'm sure some more exotic trees that have replaced most of the Elm that were removed. I did see some pretty nice, mature Catalpa trees there.
