Electrical Docking Drawer info

Hair salons often have these set ups. If you go to one who does, find out who their electrician is. if there is a vendor in your area who sells salon equipment (not products, equipment), they can probably offer guidance on an electrician who can consult with yours.

While you might be able to do what is shown in the photographs above, other photographs of this item installed in a cabinet show the cords not plugged in and placed in the flat area at the front of the insert. Note that the insert is ~19" deep so there may not be space above it for an outlet.

Moving electrical wire back and forth wears it, and creates breaks. That's a fire hazard. That is why ONLY UL approved type docking drawers, with the support arm, are allowed to do this. Which is a mistake, really. It's still moving wire back and forth. It's still a terrible idea and a fire risk.

To clarify: The drawer shown above doesn't contain an outlet. The hot iron and the hair dryer would have to be plugged in elsewhere. The design suggested by BeverlyFLADeziner would be more convenient.

Yes, unfortunately nobody consulted me and the cabinet is made and this is the only insert that fits in the space. Oh, well. One more thing that is badly designed for the real user!

It would probably be better for UL and the NFPA to require for cables where movement is expected that the cable's conductors use high fine-wire count instead of the standard conductor bundle configuration. For example, vacuum cleaner cords and welding cables are of this type, and can last for decades.

It's not badly designed. It just doesn't have an outlet in the drawer which isn't common.
