Torn about appliances, Miele, Bosch, etc

So my kitchen is ordered. Istarted buying appliances and came across the following dilemmas.

My overriding theory today is outside of a few slect brands, life expectancy of a $1300 GE French door is equal to the life expectancy of $4500 Cafe French Door. So outside of a few companies, the higher the price the better the look of the appliance.

So this brings me to two dilemmas:

Dishwasher. This is an area where I actually do use the fancy options. I am installing an 18-inch dishwasher. (space issues) Do I buy a Bosch 800 or a Miele G 5482 SCVi SL. Price is about the same.

Refrigerator, I only have space fora 30 inch refrigerator. I can buy a Frigidaire French Door for $1500. or I can buy a 30 inch Miele bottom freezer KFN 4776 for $3000. i am constantly reading stories of refrigerators breaking down after 3-4 years. So the cost of two Frigidaires equals the most in one Miele. I need. the refigerator to last at least 10-12 years.

So which one do I get?

also the difference in capacity is not relevant as there is a garage refrigerator/freezer present.

My experience with Bosch dishwashers has been better than my experience with Miele with Bosch being half the price. However many people love their Miele dishwashers. I have no experience with Miele refrigerators but I did recently splurge on a SubZero because I needed to switch to a built-in to fit into the existing space so the drawers would open all the way and be able to be removed for cleaning. I personally would not pay considerably more for any brand of refrigerator other than SZ. I've had an LG fridge for ten years at a different house and it's been great.

We did a complete kitchen remodel in the past and I bought all higher end appliance brands including a top of the line Miele dishwasher. After ten years I moved and replaced all the appliances in the house with mid-price brands. I was perfectly happy with the less expensive brands and realized I would never again pay a premium for the more expensive ones.

On dishwashers, if you have hard water, definitely get the Miele.

If you know of an appliance repair person, ask their opinion. I've found that repair people often know what to stay away from.

Miele for both, especially the frig.

The freezer removable bin design is very functional.

I like GE stoves and freezers. I buy the basic. The Cafe is just decor. The guts are the same.

I have not bought a GE refrigerator, but I will when this one dies.

I have a GE refrigerator. I bought it in 2016. Its been perfect. Its the basic too. I left one in my last house that was GE, and it was 20 yrs old. They are still using it.

GE Appliance was bought by Haier. Most frigs are made in other countries.

Haier bought GE in June of 2016 ... 9-1/2 years ago, ancient history in the appliance industry.

History is important in the industry. Whirlpool killed the need for quality competition when they bought Amana and KitchenAid. They then only needed to give a 1-year warranty. Haier frigs have some history of 2-5 year life spans for the compressor used in current models.

I'm a fan of Bosch dishwashers. Mine have worked well, lasted long, never needed repair, and have excellent internal space and layout.

I live in NYC where 30" fridges are the norm and everyone in my building seems to be getting and liking Liebherr as of late. (I made room for a 36" subzero. Now all my neighbors store extra food for parties in my fridge!)

Our appliance repair person recommended the mid-level (money-wise) Bosch dishwasher. As for refrigerators, I had Frigidaire (single door-bottom freezer) in my previous house which lasted the 11 years I lived there. I currently have a Frigidaire French door-bottom freezer counter depth and love it. This one is 3 years old and replaced a side-by-side (not my favorite style).

Miele is a popular brand. If it has a leak detection system, that is a good choice. The 800 series Bosch we installed in 2012 was the best DW we'd ever had. It broke one year ago, due to a leak that was difficult to locate and expensive to repair ($400 quote) for an 11 y/o DW. I chose another Bosch (500 series) because of Bosch's leak detection system that saved our hardwood floors from damage when the 800 broke.

@3katz4me Absolutely not! For one thing, the appliance brand may have the same name but in all likelihood, a different owner due to so much consolidation of brands. Who knows which brand's quality standards prevailed?

Anyone who's ever worked in the manufacture of anything can tell you how costs are controlled and one area is thinner, lighter, cheaper components. In spite of all the great advances in materials science, a plastic valve or component under cold temperatures or varying temps will simply not last as long as a brass one.

Add to that the consolidating of what used to be individual components into one unit that's now a plug in piece, when things break down, the cost to repair goes up. No longer can you just change a light bulb in a refrigerator when it goes out, now you have to buy a plug in unit that yes, is easy to change but you have to buy 10 of them because they aren't sold individually.

And get off my lawn! 😂

Yes - which is why it’s not particularly useful to get a recommendation for a brand someone has that’s still going strong after 20 years.

I've had very good and repair-free use from LG refrigerators. Not a brand I would have thought of, but I moved in to a home with a 4 year old one, and it's still working perfectly 4 years later - and I expect it will for the next 4 or 5 years. I'm kind of hoping it won't, because I hate the French door style and want to replace it, but I'll keep it since it's working so well.

I did turn off the ice maker when I moved in, though.

I have Miele dw in FL house and just got a new Bosch 800 for our main house. I hate the

Bosch racks, especially the silverware 3rd rack. The racks don't roll smoothly and the silverware doesn't fit securely at all even though there are both wide and narrow slots. Probably a third of the time I slide out the 3rd rack and all the silverware is loose and laying all over the rack. Never have that problem with the Miele. I wish I had gone with the Miele.

I have the three rack Bosch. We use the silverware baskets for the silverware and use the top flatter rack for small glass cups, spatulas that will get stuck if in the silverware rack and other long, flat serving pieces that are more hefty (like my silver salad fork and spoon). Not a great design but we made it work.

"just got a new Bosch 800 for our main house. I hate the Bosch racks, especially the silverware 3rd rack. "

The Bosch 3rd rack has evolved with different models, and I don't think for the better - I specifically didn't buy a Bosch 800 because I didn't like the design of their 3rd rack in that version - I prefer the "standard" third rack.
