Marlins, your home is lovely and you did a great job on the wallpaper! Now you need to take it to the next level and start adding in some accessories - a nice mirror or piece of art on the wallpapered wall, some curtains on the windows and, if you don't have any yet, some pillows on the sofa. It just needs a couple of extra layers of texture, a little bit of color, and then you will be done!

what about my existing mirror, does it better replaced by floor standing lamp? honestly i dont like its position
  • 12 years ago
if i can suggest, if possible you can add chandelier to replace the current light, and some book shelves on left wall wouldnt hurt. anyhow, place is already looking great!
I suggest moving the mirror to another room (bedroom). Add a colorful painting to the wall. Then add two small chairs to form a conversation group with the sofa.
A rug will help to define the space. Use a color from whatever painting you get.

i agree with the previous responses ^^ adding a big rectangular mirror on the wallpapered wall will definitely change the whole look. Making the room brighter and giving it visually more space, perhaps. Or are you planning to put a tv besides the lamp? The existing mirror stand is more suitable for a bedroom, as previously said. Maybe change in its place, some greenery? A favourite plant of yours in vase? Good luck!

Hello Marlina. Semi-sheer curtains would be perfect, I think. The first below seem to me to have been designed for your room. And though it's a rare day I recommend lace curtains, I think they would be lovely -- and, these days, delightfully unexpected -- in this room. But simple, dignified. Nothing frilly. Not that I can imagine you being frilly.

As for your mirror, which I really like, that isn't the place for it. I wouldn't put the floor lamp there either -- I think it probably belongs behind the sofa, on the left, for evening reading etc. Just centre the cabinet on that wall, and with art in place above it, I don't think you will need anything in that corner. You might put a simple wall accessory between the door and the brown wall, though, if you feel the corner looks empty. Something that wouldn't compete with the main piece of art, such as a piece of wooden fretwork.

I found the one below on http://www.madeinthailand.co.uk/index.php?page=1&act=viewCat&catId=47, but there are similar objects on Overstock, and more modern designs available elsewhere. If the budget is an issue, you could rummage in second-hand outlets for something you like.

And I would get larger lamps for the console...those look too small

Marlina, I like the sheers that Rina posted (the first pic). I had pictured a print like that, but couldn't immediately find something to illustrate the idea. I see you have patterned wallpaper over in your stairway also, so you have to watch that things don't start looking too busy. But the pattern of these curtains mimicking your wallpaper is perfect. De the sofa pillows, I thought a nice bright go,d would look best. It does t look like you like bright colors, but you do need a little something to perk up your space. I am not sure what your shopping g resources are in Indonesia, so try to find things similar to the items suggested. Also, I thought a round mirror would look best on that wall. And once again, mother pattern in this particular mirror seems to go with your wallpaper pattern. The mirror is from Wisteria.com and has a metal frame. You can probably find something similar where you are. I think all your room is lacking is a focal point, and whatever you hang on that wall will be the focal point. Then some curtains and pillows to warm things up and your room will be perfect!

@karemore55 : We have furnishing store like IKEA in Indonesia..maybe I can go there finding the nice bright sofa pillows...Yes I dont like bright colors because I worry they will start looking too busy..I am confuse what bright colors of rug, curtain, and pillows to purchased, should I purchase the same color for those? but you are right, I need a little something to perk up my space....Below i attach my dining room. It is near my living room, open to my living room...It looks "empty" also

Try putting three chairs on either side of your table - none on the ends. A large picture or mirror would look great on your dining room wall. Don't be afraid of some color. It will add life to your room.

Will you be putting a tv on the console or above it? This will determine what you do to the wall. I would go with a solid light colour for the curtains and use some prints and colour on the cushions. I can see gold, bronze and copper in the mix. The lamps do need to be larger/taller. I would say to put a large mirror on the wall in the dining room but I think it faces the front door and isn't that bad fung shui? I think the table would look good with the chairs along each side also. Do you have any great travel photos? These would look nice on canvases on the dining room wall and would be great conversation pieces for visiting diners. Just a thought. You have a lovely home.

@cathieg : yes I will put a TV on the console..Thank you very much for ideas..what kind of lamp shoud i put above the dining table
  • 12 years ago
@Rina : I like the first curtain, it has a similar colors with others
  • 12 years ago
Marlins, as this is open plan you will need to match the light fitting over the table to what you use in the living room. Once you put your tv on the console then you will be able to see how to decorate the rest of that wall.

Sorry, * Marlina, pesky predictive text!

Marlina, I had a look at Ikea's website, and found these Sanela curtains which I thought would work in your home. The Maskros pendant might look good over your dining room table. The flowers in its shape remind me of the pattern of your wallpaper. I couldn't really find any bigger lamps or sofa pillows that I thought would work. Any other international stores there? Otherwise, for the pillows, if you can find something in a gold color with a large print on them, this would be enough to give your room a little more sparkle.
@karemore55 : i like the curtain (it looks similar color with surrounding. I like Maskros pendant also. But do you think I have to replace my exisiting pendant in the living room also? We have only one biggest and best international store here in my town. It like IKEA - named INFORMA. I would like to search similar pendant and curtain above.....

Hi Marlina, No - sorry! Your living room light looks fine. So maybe you don't need a new overhead light at all. I thought someone said something about getting a new dining room light, so that's why i looked for a light for you. Actually, I can't even see a dining room light in that second picture you posted.

I apologize for not keeping up with your post. I'm having problems with either my iPad or the Houzz site, not sure which. I'm not getting notifications whenever there has been another comment made, so I have to keep going through my discussions to see if there has been any new comments. I hope it clears up soon - very frustrating! So, maybe just get the curtains, find some cushions and look for taller lamps, yes?

Karemore, it doesnt matter, I need also pendant lamp above my dining...and i am confusing, should the pendant above the dining similar with the pendant above living room? Or can I keep the pendant in the living room, while I purchase another pendant similar to your white pendant picture above for my dining room? Because my dining room open to living room...
I like your living room pendant, can you find another one for the dining room which should be placed lower above the table. Also like first set of curtains Rina showed. Love your wallpapered wall. Great job.

Hi there, you have a really cool eye for design! All you need is a pop of color here and there to get a completed look. Here are some suggestions, all items are from our blog at this link:

Marlina, You can have two different pendants in the area, as long as they are similar in style. That is, both modern, or both traditional, etc. so if you like that Ikea one I posted, it will look fine with your living room light.

Marlina, I know you don't want things to loud or colorful, but I like the art suggestions that were posted above. A piece of art would look good in your dining room. Or you could hang a mirror there - that would be interesting, and maybe not as bright as a picture. But I do like that art!

Pure home, i like the orange color painting...it looks great....

Karemore, yes i do like the art, i would like to find similar in store...once i get one of it i will post :-)...

As an art dealer I get very frustrated with people making recommendations to buy CHEAP art. If you are willing to invest in quality furniture, rugs and accent pieces which will only ever LOOSE value over time you should always be looking to buy QUALITY art as an investment. My children over their life time have acquired pieces and now have an investment portfolio of art on their walls that is worth 100x what they paid for it and even in the worst of economic markets ART has never gone down in value.
