Baseboard discoloration near shower

The edge of baseboard just outside the shower shows some water damage and almost black discoloration. But there is really no water going puddled around that area at all. I thought it might be moisture and run the exhaust fan for nearly 45 minutes. However this black patch came back after repair. Any ideas on how to stop this permanently?

I presume there is a leak and it is black mold. Leaks are not always visible. Water is a crazy force and could be wicking from elsewhere and that is why you are not seeing it when the baseboard is removed. How long did you keep the baseboard off when you have it replaced? Did you use a moister reader in that area when it was removed?

Well there must be a leak somewhere behind the baseboard and what you see is mold so you need to take care of this quickly.

I agree, it is moisture from a leak. The only permanent fix is to have someone take it apart and see what is leaking and then have the repairs. Yes, the black appears to be mold.

I had cut out that part of the baseboard during repair but there was no leak. Does it make sense to put a PVC/vinyl baseboard there instead of MDF?

You have a leak.

Remove baseboard again, and leave it all off for several days, you will eventually see water.

You need to rip out more than that baseboard. You have a leak not a baseboard problem.
