Water leaking into basement

Last summer we shortened our driveway so that it now stops at the front of our house and what used to be the driveway is now grass. It previously ran the full length of the house. After doing this, we started getting water in the basement whenever there was medium to heavy rain (anything more than a quarter of an inch in an hour). The area where we get the leak is right by the basement door, and while we previously thought this was water coming under the door we now believe it's due to water coming in thru a leaky foundation wall. Attaching a picture of where we're seeing water pooling.
I understand that excavating and waterproofing the exterior is the best solution, though I'm wondering if there are other solutions like installing a French drain in the new yard that might be equally effective if they're able to move the water before it gets to the house. The yard itself is graded and the gutters all feed out the street so those aren't options. Also, for reference, the door is about seven feet below ground level
