Remodeling ideas

last month

We have a farmhouse built in 1876 deciding on full demo vs remodel. for remodel we would like to take out the backside and add a new kitchen with a master suite; as well as a garage addition. i would welcome some AI ideas color schemes etc. i plan on keeping the brick, would like to possibly see with a full front porch and front door added on the six window side. would likely eliminate the deck and the backside of the house to accomodate the addition. ill try and add a front shot of the house.

I am screaming at you DO NOT DEMO THIS HOME! It is a Greek Revival. Some one replace windows with a slider and a nasty looking second floor deck. You own a gem. Work with a designer who knows its historical value.

Location? Your home has a history.

MN; thank you for the vote for restoration.

I'd leave the side as it is and fix the front. I would not demo it.

Just to clarify the six window side faces the front yard.

I would not demo it either. Restore what is needed. Its a historic house, and I wouldnt want to take that away from it. Too many already have been destroyed by owners trying to modernize what shouldnt be modernized, except for maybe plumbing, and electrical, and maybe adding some insulation.

What a fabulous house! The front door is in the front of the house already. as others have stated, trying to make this house something it isn’t will give you a muddled mess. Live here a year before you do anything except maybe interior paint and repairs.

So much fabulous potential and heartily agree to a thoughtful restoration - i would tear off that deck with my bear hands if i had to

(fwiw we bought a neglected 1926 home and now she’s light filled, pretty & functional - we lived there for 7 years then moved the kitchen and added a master suite . - a labor of love for sure. Finding the right architect and builder for this type of project is crucial)

Thanks for the comments - the six window side faces the road; the far left side in the first pic - faces a creek that raises so far it nearly reaches the house sometimes. We bought this place years ago and just did some minor updates to keep it livable - we are now in a position to do the right thing for this place. The creekside is built on a crawl space.

Here is a house like yours with the. addition on the back of the house. Owners have stayed true to the Greek Revival style and created a lovely back yard retreat.

You can't crowdsource this type of thing. You need a good architect. This approach will also help you to spend your money wisely. Only someone who can visit your site and has exact measurements of the existing building will be able to do the best job. You don't need to go to an architect with exact specifications of what you want. Tell them about the problems you want to solve. They're in the solutions business.

We knew that before i posted this - that if were doing this we need an architect. i really like the historical architect idea. i do enjoy seeing the other ideas and examples people are sharing.

I would def look at the architect’s past projects as part of your decision process - we went with one recommended to us by good friends who live in a old home but we couldnt get to good plans (then we looked at some of his past project and realized he prioritized adding square footage which is fine but not what we wanted) so we paid him and tried again, second one worked great
