Lounge Area / WFH

last month

Hi all !

I’m looking for advice on how to rearrange my furniture, as the layout never quite feels right. The diagram below shows my current setup (all measurements in cm). This space primarily serves as a home office for my partner and me.

We also have a two-seater sofa and a round snuggle armchair that we love. Both have been in the space since before COVID.

How would you rearrange this space to improve flow while fitting all the furniture comfortably?

Thanks again everyone!

I will say I have always hated cuddle chairs so my first thought is ditch that . But this is an office so why also use it as a cuddle spot I guess I need more info really as to why this LR is where all things take place it seems . Is this an actual work at home office ? FYI this is a US site so all measurements in feet and inches will get you better help.

Hi @Patricia Colwell Consulting its a 2nd living area which we turned it into our work-from-home area. We have a 2nd living room where we watch our TV. Its just thtat this spot never seems to really work; trying to fit 2 x desks, and a sofa and a "snuggle" armchair. For reference this is the round armchair - https://www.plush.com.au/collections/snuggle?srsltid=AfmBOop0uZ1xe0_F8Kk1ZNe3gqjE4Nb9G1uzdRolm3_rdL5pPP6CmI9T

I feel you need to decide if you need the couch and the snuggle chair or are you just dumping them into this area because you have no where else to put them. If you both work from home I would concentrate on that being your main focus and get that area the way you want and then see if you can fit in the other items. I can suggest you move those out of the room for a week and see what you miss about them if anything.

If this really is a work from home set up I would have one comfortable chair and then focus on the desks and work aspect. For me I would need far more storage if we both worked from home. Our home office is a mess right now but my husband and I have our desks beside each other in a row and backside of the room is all cabinetry for storage.

You might try this arrangement. It has a good view of the window regardless of where one is sitting.

IMO a work from home office is best when it keeps business seperate from home in all aspects. I thonk maybe the snuggle chair in the bedroom or even for TV watching . The picture does not make me like it one bit more but if you love it then maybe try it is a different space and keep the sofa and the rest office stuff . Maybe matching desks for a bit more unified look. What do you use the sofa for ?

@Emily you might be onto something. Only thing here im trying to avoid is pushing all the furnitures to the walls. I might give the layout below a try.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting we had the two-seater and snuggle armchair well before COVID. The space was originally intended as a second living area for hosting guests, and it worked well since (even had a coffee table, but we got rid of it cause got too crowded).

When COVID happened, we made it into a dedicated work from home spacee, and it has remained that way since. Since then the room has never quite settled into a clear identity since now we're trying to accommodate both the original lounge furniture and two desks, which is likely why it feels a bit ..odd. Hope this explains why the room it is at this stage!

I get that it does not work but what are you willing to give up? IMO rooms need identity to function and also look good. Your space is confused , you need to decide the identity , for me that would be office , no snuggle chair in any office .

Look at it this way: if you were setting up a work from home office today, would you buy a loveseat and cuddle chair for your office? If the answer is no, then move those items out.

I think Emily's layout lets you keep the lounge area you like while separating the work area. I think that was what was confusing about your original layout-it mixed both areas in together. Keep work separate from living and I think the room will feel better. Is the Kallax unit used for work materials or just storage for books, etc.? What configuration is the Kallax? Can you post a picture of it?
