Look at an oval Saarinen Tulip Table. A classic, but pricey.

    Several sizes.

Several choices for top material/color and base color.

I'd look for an oval pedestal, not so long so that you could put a small chair at the other end if you choose.

The shape you have seats the most with your banquette seating. What you need isa trestle table with rounded corners. A trestle keeps the legs out of the way. Any other shape will give you less functional eating space.

With kids you want to make sure if you choose a pedestal table that it really is sturdy and no one can lean on it and wobble

You are getting good advice on table options. What’s going on with the fabric on the banquette seat? It doesn’t look great, but it’s also not that functional for seating, and I can see a kid squirming and slipping off the bench. You can order custom cushions online in performance fabrics, pleather, or leather by entering your dimensions on their web sites. If you are crafty you might be able to make cushions yourself, but that’s a task that would be beyond me.

This is the Mihaela table on sale at Arhaus.

if the banquette is to remain long term you may want to consider better cushions and something for the back. there are many images just on Houzz. depends on your budget for this, but you could do better for seating, as well as the table component.

My first thought was the tulip table, but if your family leans on or sits on the table, the trestle might be a better option. Is there such a thing as a trestle with an oval-ish top?

You could also consider a round top, so one person on each bench, and two chairs. If the table has a leaf, it can extend to add people to the benches. That gives you the most flexibility, and most convenient for everyday use.

It's a tricky space, since there are sliding doors to the right of the banquette, so no one can really sit there.

I also agree that an oval table is your best bet; one with a double pedestal or a wide pedestal will give you the most stability. Depending on your style you might like one of these:

Question for you - are those seat backs comfortable without built-in cushions?

So you are seating four. I am thinking you have no room for chairs in the space as it is also a hall way to the sliders. If the banquette was smaller, just a corner that sat two you would have room to store two chairs when not eating. The banquette itself needs to be vinyl or leather so sliding when scooting down is easiest. Also when we had a trestle table and banquette we had the table pushed up against the banquette and chairs tucked tight to the table.when not eating. DH made ours so we could be sure the width of the table top was optimal w/o being wider than it needed to be. Round tables seem to take up more space than other shapes.

What, specifically, is not working? The sharp glass edges? Inability to seat 4 people on just the banquette seats? Squabbling over who has to sit in the corner and can't get out? Adults can't squash onto seats if the table is pulled close enough for kids?

I'm sure the problem is the large glass top with the sharp pointy corners. A nightmare for both kids and adults. Plus the table legs make it difficult to sit and move a chair without banging your knees. All around a bad choice.

Wondering what the OP thinks of the many suggestions?

Thank you all for the suggestions.

I like the idea of the oval table which I will try to buy online and adding a round jute rug and perhaps a light fixture up top.

Unfortunately, changing the cushions is not an option at this as they are really expensive. I can add some additional pillows to the back.

Currently the seating is very uncomfortable due to the table being so sharp around the edges and people not being able to sit comfortably.

Hopefully with the oval table it will solve the problem

    Thank you

I believe the shape of the last table is often referred to as pill or racetrack, in case that helps in your search. (Oval is kind of a different thing, and I think pill/racetrack would work better here, or better yet a rectangle with rounded corners.)

I don’t see a rug being able to work

A plan view showing all of the dimensions would be helpful for specific table recommendations.

Do you like the glass table other than the corners? Asking because if you do like the glass, I'd check into the cost of having the corners slightly rounded by a professional glass shop before buying something new. But if you prefer a non-glass top (I prefer wood for looks and warmth) then I like the MCM table posted by Diana above. The top looks like the right shape, and the legs don't look like they'd get in the way too much.

Re: cushions, check some places like Home Goods for pillows for the back and cushions for the seats.

Get a table with a single pedestal leg/stand in the middle. You can go oval or boat (rectangular with rounded edges). Check out Room and Board you can mix and match size, shape, top, and leg finishes. Great for this kind of set up.

Measurements are so important here. I would also create a mockup tabletop out of Big A boxes and duck tape to ensure people can scoot into their seat, get to the sliding glass door, etc before I ordered anything.

Measurements 8ft ling from bench to the glass doors.

6 ft wide from bench to island

Current table is 6ft long x 3ft wide

If you have link for table suggestions please post ... Under $600 preferably.

    Wood or white color table?

    Thank you all!
