Need Exterior Design Advice

last month

I am looking for ideas to make the front of the house look more modern and sophisticated using simple clean landscaping or outdoor wall art or decor. I am located in a South Florida. I am unable to change the paint color and want to remove stone rounded planter. Do not want anything that is tacky or “playful”. Suggestions are appreciated.

"outdoor wall art or decor " are almost always " tacky or “playful”, in standard suburban yards. A grand fountain would not fit your over all space. If not the planter something growing, tall, green would be nice between the windows. Perhaps and arbor with a vine? What is best in your zone is a question for your local nurserys. What's with the orange road cone? Will you plant out the square infront of your patio? The HOT color of your home is tough to work with. Something cooler could be lovely.

The square in front of the patio is going to be filled with concrete and painted to match the driveway which is being resealed with terracotta color. You made me laugh about the orange cone - it will be only used to make sure no one drives on the driveway while drying and then put in shed. Trying to tone down the color of the house which was just painted with an unexpected brightness. Being in South FL it will fade. Here is a picture that shows how the house should look in the future after the driveway is color resealed & canopy replaced. Trying to update 1950’s house.

Your best bet would be to enlist the services of a landscape designer, that is what’s needed, not ”outdoor wall art or decor”. I would rethink filling that square with more concrete.

That color may mellow in the Florida sun but it could be much better. It is so harsh and conflicting with your trim color and roof. Plus it is a stucco and brick home and yellow has no place on this architecture. I would paint it a warm white leaving your trim the same color. I would replace the doors with a natural wood tone door and on your driveway side I would replace that door doing the same and then wrap your awning posts in the same wood tone or if you get really abitious build out the roof for your covered area. although i think the green awning is cute and can work.

I AI'd your AI with instructions for modern and sophisticated, easy upkeep. Is the canopy for a car or patio dining?

You mentioned you are aiming for modern and sophisticated, so hope this helps. To start, a softer colored sealant is highly suggested so driveway doesn’t take over.

The canopy looks really odd - is that what you are adding? Suggest a seating area that is horizontal so you‘re not sitting on the driveway (it will also add to the facade).

Skip wall art and landscaping will have a huge influence, including where the stone planter was located. If you take a picture of your home and head to nursery, let them make suggestions. Suggest a different door color.

I would add rock instead of concrete to the front area. It's a focal point.

The budget we are working with will have to be a DYI , so there aren’t funds for major changes. Over the years we have did different things in the little area in front of the patio. Fountain = attracted frogs and lots of upkeep, rocks always get muddy even with landscape fabric due to sideway rain in summer and grass just dies. The canopy in the driveway is to cover our vehicle from heat and rain. I do like the planter box in Tomzo1 picture and how manicure it looks. That is very much a style I like. Maybe I can use it in the front under the windows and add landscape lights. That is something I think we could pull off and be in budhet

A new color scheme could change the appearance.

Okay, no rock in the front area. What about native grasses to fill that area. They will thrive. Something soft to add texture and movement.

    The yard need plants.

These are not modern landscapes but the foliage screens the house.

If you can't or just prefer not to change the color of your home then try using your house trim colors (white/red) in the landscaping theme, so it ties the home and land together.

Yes, you desperately need landscaping to soften the look of your boldly-colored home. I like what Emily and tracefloyd came up with. Green grasses and trees are what you need. A short tree, especially at the left corner, would help your house not appear to be simply dropped down on the lot like a Monopoly piece.

I think the word you are trying to come up with regarding decor is ”whimsical.” Like grandma-ish fluttery flags, painted concrete figures, welcome signs, itty bitty flower pots shaped like toads, etc. To me, whimsical is the opposite of sophisticated. I always strive for understated sophisticated decor, and not much of it. One $100 piece is much better than twenty $5 pieces.

The color is off putting for sure and why can't you change it? Yes to removing the planter for sure but the best bang for your buck is hard work and landscaping . When budget is tight then your physical labor is a must . I have never found grass attactive in FLA. so think past all the grass. The furniture on the seating area needs to be more modern for sure. I too like tozmo1's ideas but not cheap for sure . Rocks in different sizes are both doable and add interest for little money . Go to a good garden center and talk to someone with landscape design background to find plants that work well where you live. Have a plan then work toward it sometimes it will need to be done in times when you have have a bit of cash leftover. But a plan is what you start with .If you love tozmo1 ideas then that can happen but not all at once.

Use a much paler, far less colorful coating on the driveway. Don't try out out-bright the gold paint on the house.
