Dining / hangout in this space

last month
last modified: last month

We sre going back to our ranch house in the Bay Area after 3 years of being overseas. We sold most of our furniture when we left as we had to rent out the house. the interiors were all painted white following our realtor’s advice.

i would like to create an informal dining and hangout area for us. It’s just me and my husband 95% of the time but when we entertain, we could have 6-10 friends join us.

Would love to hear your ideas for a dining table and seating.

adding pics of the area and the adjacent kitchen (wish I could add an island but the existing peninsula and the fact the immediate space in front of the kitchen is a pass through to the family room make it difficult).

The angle of the pictures make the space look bigger than it is:)

Also, there is an opening into the family room next to the fireplace.

A floor plan is needed to do a layout for you.

Your cute green fireplace, why not paint that wall green..make it more important.

Two 3 seater sofas, two accent chairs, rug to fit the furniture, not the room. where the console is in this photo is where your fireplace is.

Drapery panels, accent pieces, always make a scheme look finished.

    O k, that seating for 8.

For dining, at least from your photos, I see a long wall. Invest in a drop leaf table for dining. A piece in this shape, can go up against the wall; flip up one side and you have seats at either end, and 3 more seats. Pull it out from the wall, flip up the other leaf and you have 3 more seats. Voila! Dining for 8.

Here’s what’s behind the fireplace, what we used previously as the family/TV room which has an attached wet bar

I’m struggling with where a dining table would go (we need to buy one, so flexible on the shape and size, ideally extendable)

Not to confuse my original question, there are these two spaces to play with for seating and dining

Thats the main entry door and a small space there

    I’ll send a layout shortly

It says Bedroom next to the entry door, but its just a foyer/entry area.

Think this used to be the dining area for the original owners.

Can you get a tape measure and add these dimensions to your plan?

Are you wanting to keep the current rooms ? You say you would love an island but it won;t work. Are you asking for furniture planning or are you looking to renovate to make the space work for you better?

We are looking to just decorate/furnish now; a rebuild will likley happen in 4-5 years so dont want to put $$$ now.

Just re-painting and furniture planning, no renovation.

To the person who asked about the dimensions, we are not back in the house yet.

Some estimations (all in feet) in the attached pic.(sorry about the scratchy writing)

Just here to say your kitchen is gorgeous. I’m sure the pros and space experts will be helpful around furniture placement and ideas.

I would consider something for coats, shoes and hats in the entryway. There seems to be a lack of closet space there. Maybe build a closet with doors?

  • last month

I would do dining where it says bedroom at the front and a living room where it say dining. But no tv. Then I would make the family room a cozy tv space

@RedRyder you just made my day! I designed every inch of that kitchen when we remodeled it 15 years back and it turned out to be a super efficient kitxhen though smallish.

You are absolutely on the money about needing a coat closet. There is a small hall closer down the hall but that may go when we convert the powder room to a full bathroom. i will start another thread abour the the coat closet:)

Keep it all in one thread.

@WestCoast Hopeful rhe dining would then be behind a wall from the kitchen and also having the dining table be the first thing you see when entering the house is not ideal.

    Maybe a breakfast nook?

i don’t know where a coat closet would go. what are the dimensions i need for a sizeable closet that can take about 20 coats.

    this is rhe front room

  • last month

It’s an interesting layout. The room across from the kitchen with the fireplace just seems like a gathering space not a dining space.

  • last month

I should add we are not dining table people generally (eat in kitchen works for us). we do need the option to have a small one when my elderly parents visit which is a few weeks in a year.

If you are not dining table people but just need it for parties or holidays consider investing in a Transformer Table. You can keep it as a console table for your entry and use it when needed as a dining table

    https://transformertable.com/products/round-table-with-benches?variant=43876728471621

Different styles with some going down to a simple console or small end type table etc.

I am a bit short on time today but my initial thought ,

startig in the large entry I would do two or three of these stacked side by side on the wall of the entry that shares the kitchen wall to serve as closet and storage

    https://www.westelm.com/products/miles-armoire-h13932/?catalogId=71&sku=7087705&pickuplocation=ST:%7Bstore_code%7D&cm_ven=PLA&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=Furniture%20%3E%20Dressers%20%26%20Armoires&cm_ite=7087705_14465514686_aud-944520937335:pla-548809733198&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=14465514686&gbraid=0AAAAABjYLmnn_qrKUA8m7Q0m4i_QpsUb6&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2YDQBhD_ARIsAE1qeSfBjm0hZflCkt6gphLvACG370wfJNhh2a2c1TbHJkI2ludkV2IWmVQaAo8bEALw_wcB

then I would get a trandormer table when which in its smallest circumfance is 45" and center it in that entry way room as an entry table. Place a great arrangement on top of it and then on the wall opposite the entry door a large fantastic piece of art. anchor the round table with a great area rug.

I am off for a Mothers Day celebration........aka my middle child is moving into his new place and needs help moving LOL but I will check back later and try to "show" you my ideas with some renderings. After entry I can move onto the other two spaces.

A cute banquette with a low back in the front room?? Without blocking the window, maybe shaped to face the window and
still be able to to see each other

  • last month

Look for dining tables the have the leaves hidden underneath.
    Like this one.

Float the seating area in facing the fireplace and the dining space for 10 behind the sofa area ( using an extendable table which has flaps you can remove from the centre) that way you can customize it to the number of guest you have, and keep it smaller for yourselves if need be.

  • last month

If I understand you correctly, you’re suggesting to put an extendable dining table near the wall facing the fireplace and the sofa right next to the fireplace, facing it? The line of sight from the entrance will be directly on the dining table then

Layout as in Houzz examples ( just layout example) and pic of extendable table example ( if you notice the leaf sections you can remove) i have similar table as i can have 15 family members at weekends at times.
I am not sure of exact look of your room so i apologize if i haven’t estimated correctly)

I am very familair with your type of home having lived in Marin County for a number of years and with family still there.

If i were walking into the space and given the requests you made I would do the following.

It sounds like its just you and your husband living daily at thsi home but you like to entertain and you do have family who comes and stays. If you are like my husband and I even though we do have a dining room we sit at out island 98% of the time to eat. For that reason at the kitchen peninsula i would place two seats to do just that

Entering the home you have a big space. No closets that I can see and for now a lot of wasted space really for an entrance. I would make it both functional and something that does double duty while being enjoyable visually when you walk in the space. I would place some wardrobes against one wall a bench against the opposite wall a fantastic piece of art opposite the entry door and in the center of the space a great light fixture and a table that extends (like the one I I shared in my other comment. 95% of the time its an entry but when you need to have a dining room it becomes one by opening up the table

Now for that entertaining. The room now labeled dining room is good size but its shallow. It really depends on how much seating you want. For optimal seating and entertaining I would place two small swivel chairs with a small round table in front of the fireplace. (note if you really want a daily eating table for you and you husband you can raise the height on this grouping for dining) I would do two sofas and an additional occasional chair in a seating grouping. You will likely need apartment sized sofas (76-77") for this room. Place a console behind the one with two low rectangular lights for ambiance. A corner end table with a large lamp between the two sofas. A great looking floor lamp in the fireplace corner. An iron and glass coffee table to break up too much wood. Anchor it all with a nice LARGE neiutral rug. In this rendering I have used an Ikat fabric for both drapery and the occasional chair.

Moving into your comfort area you family room I would remove the wood (Mantel?) its way too high and is that even a fireplace? It looks odd and I can't tell. But I would mount your TV on it. I will let the rendering speak for itself.

to scale based on what you provided

ignore furniture style and colors on this 3d rendering they are place holders but this is your space to scale . the actual rooms above are the colors and styles I would recommend based off the colors and architecture of your home.

    Thank you so much!
The front room rendering is outstanding; really transforms the space. Can you help redo the dining space to be less traditional and with a banquette like seating around the window.
We like non traditional seating, casual and bohemian is more our style

Also the family room is slightly bigger than whats rendered (about 17’ feet long - TV to wall behind couch and 13’ feet across); sorry about approximations and the dining room width is a little restricted because of the passthrough in front of the kitchen, so maybe about 8-9’ width and 13’ length

One big afghani carpet you see below the blue couch and some smaller Moroccan rugs

We have a Room&Board 78”x32” counter height table that we using in our apartment but that will not fit in our ranch house. Maybe as a work desk in one of the rooms

An idea for the ‘dining area’

  • last month

I would love a banquette somewhere:)

  • PRO

    last modified: last month

Why the banquette? where you have them in your drawing are of use how?. So question what purpose do you see them serving? Are you planning on placing eating tables in front of them?

All the photos you have shared thus far are AI so it is difficult to know the exact proportions of this home without exact measurements. Again your room is very shallow based on the measuremtns you did provide. We can surmise that if the back wall of the family room is only 13' then the fireplace wall would only be roughly 10' or less assuming the walk way running between laundry and kitchen and those rooms is a minimum of 3' . which I am assuming the least amount it can be to make it a comfortable walking path. Normally these are 42" or more. . WIth a room that shallow it isnt going to hold two sofas facing the window , curved sofas take up more room, two banquettes, and a cocktail table . Even if you cut down the room to naviagte the room.

You stated you sold your furniture , so are these pieces coming back to the U.S. with you or were they stored for the years you were gone? If so what shape are they in? Something to consider.

BayArea Rancher thanked Design Interior South
  • last month

Thanks! i agree with your assessment. we have just the furniture I’ve added pictures for (above). We need to buy more. i was thinking we need a recliner couch in rhe family room and the blue couch in the dining area and maybe a super low on across from it (to not block the view of the backyard).

About the foyer space, i was thinking we likely dont need a coat closet. We will have our coats in a deep closet in one of the rooms and for guests, we can have a hall tree or a coat valet for them to pop light jackets (this is California:)).

So that opens up the foyer for other possibilities.

Your estimates are pretty accurate and it is a 3 ft walkway
