Struggling with rug choice, help is appreciated.

Need some help with ideas for an area rug to go with furniture in picture. Decorating is "in progress", but sofa, chairs and coffee table stay. Cabinets are a very dark blue, almost black. Looking at 9 x 12 or even 10 x 13 size.

These rugs are all similar and from Wayfair.

Emily, thank you. I have been struggling between this pattern type or an abstract.

Here are some options so you can see how much color and pattern you want in the space.

I really like the rug in @Emily’s last rendering superimposed into your room.

Right now your room has a brown side and a blue side. The rug helps bridge the two. Consider adding a couple blue pieces on the brown side such as a throw on the sofa or a bowl on the cocktail table or something else.

I can’t tell from the photo angle - does the mantel color complement the rest of the room? Nice displays on your shelves next to the fireplace (that is always hard to get right imo).

Thank you, the mantel color is same shade as flooring. Comments on this example of an abstract?

    Too much?

Nice rug but I personally don’t love the rug’s warmer beige background up against the chairs. The background of the chair fabric looks much cooler and whiter. Of course, colors on computer monitors may not be true!

What about the drop leaf table? It seems out of place. How about in back of the sofa? Then measure for the rug.

There seems to be some competition between the fireplace brick and the outdoor brick, floor and mantel. How about a ground for all?

    This rug is wool.

Thank you! I couldn't figure what was wrong with that. You are absolutely correct. The chairs are quite a bit whiter.

It’s personal taste but instead of an abstract pattern I’d like it to be an all over random pattern more like this. Maybe look for one that includes more of the white from the chair.

Thank you, Jilly. I think your comments are pretty spot on. I didn't even think about the chaos with the windows and screen porch with fireplace. I am liking the jute look. I wasn't considering before thinking it might not be comfortable on the feet, maybe I can find a natural woven rug that will fit my purposes.

I also like Emily's last suggestion but with more white than beige.

Thank you all for your input, this has helped significantly.

I would visit local rug stores in your area. Oriental rug dealers now carry all styles of rugs and they are usually happy to bring them to your house to try and/or loan them out for a few days. Seeing them in your space is the best way to choose the right one.

Anything with slate blue brings in the bluestone from the outdoor fireplace and ties the spaces together visually. My favorite is the last abstract from Emily.

What is the bulky blue object outside the windows? Sofa or tablecloth?

Is the brown sofa pulled back as far as it can go?

I know it's a small thing but the two white chairs at an angle would drive me nuts so I would have the them squared up.

tracefloyd, thank you. Bulky blue object is a porch sofa. Brown leather sofa is in the middle of a large open concept room. There is a drop leaf table that will be behind it. Agree on the chairs...they are now straight. :-)

Many retailers will provide rug samples. That would helpful since you can the see it in your room, your lighting & with your furniture. Some require a refundable deposit credited upon return.

Order the smallest rug size available. Easier to return then order the big one.

Jute is very soft and comfortable underfoot. Sisal is prickly.
