Scapes are not a plant

They're the flowering stems of any garlic. Hardneck being the best.

Those aren't scapes. You will only get one scpae per hardneck garlic plant. If your garlic stems are bulging then I'd guess you have softneck garlic and those are stem bulbils causing the bulging.

Garlic scapes, IME, are very distinctive looking, and I'm not seeing any in those pictures.

Thanks! I have ahd scapes before yes always 1 long stem. I save my own garlic each year and last year I started seeing this for the first time. I checked and I have been growing softneck garlic. I last ordered garlic 8 years ago so I am not sure why I just started to see this.

The flowering stem of garlic, ie the scape, is solid and circular if you cut through it. The leaves, which is what is in your photos, are flat. And as lone Jack said. There's only one scape per bulb.

Looks like witches brooming to me. It's when a clove triggers and starts it's own growth up the main cloves growth. Different than scapes. Usually it can be caused by a few things- too much nitrogen, big fluxes in water, or big fluxes in temps. Or a combo of those things.
