Looks pear suckers to me. Did you have a callery pear there in the past?

Almost certainly a callery pear seedling, although I suppose in upstate NY, where there are plenty of pears planted, it could be a seedling of culinary one, possibly pollinated by callery.

Either way, remove it - it's a terrible invasive weed.

There are a lot of squirrels and chipmunks around here. It might have been a seed carried and buried by one. I know I find a lot of peanut shells in my tool shed in the spring - probably from a neighbor's feeder.
