I can't recall if this was mentioned in prior related posts, or possibly about a visit to the "greater Longwood area".....but there is an truly unique store located in Malvern, Pa-- called DISHFUNCTIONAL STORE in MALVERN PA. <<<----- Link... I have only gone in once or twice, but it's definitely worth it if you're in the area and they do have a big online presence as well.

I'm a little miffed at Dishfunctional right now. I emailed them about my complete china set for 12 with several serving pieces. All in mint (never cleaned in the dishwasher.) condition. They said they were interested.They have a huge ebay presence and already had some of my pattern (lennox Hamilton--very classic) for sale, (for example, he had 2 salad plates for .$68.)He offered me $125 for my entire collection. I said thanks but I'll keep it, but that I thought his offer was off-puttting considering how much he is asking online. He said he has inventory in tha patttern that isn't selling--gee, wonder why? So now my china is boxed and headed to our condo in Florida. I will find an excuse to use it! (and yes, I get it--the market for china is depressed and he has a right to make a profit. But $125 for everything? I guess I'm just not business minded enough.)

It’s really sad, but there is little to no value left. I sold a full set of vintage Noritake for 16 with serving pieces on FBMP for about $100. I have another set from DH’s mom for 12. Early 60’s, neutral colors. I’ll probably list it close to the holidays for $125.

I have four sets of silverware (plate) for between 8 and 16, depending on the set. I’ll probably list one or two around the same time.

I spent more putting together a set of Noritake Gardena because it was only produced between 1948 and 1955. Plus, I liked it amd didn’t care about the market value.

#2DD recently found a fairly complete set of Lennox for $100. Tested for lead. I purchased a china tea set for my grand daughter so we could have tea parties...bought some single plates to use as serving pieces. Sets that were cast off, selling at GW for pennies on the dollar. The extra plates, all tested for lead. There's more than one reason for young people to reject grandmas china!

We drive by the Replacements showroom every time we go to see the grandboy. Unfortunately I have not visited as we are either in a hurry or it's closed when we drive by.

It is definitely on my list! Especially since I had to toss about half of my every day dishes because the finishes were etched.

Edited to add - it might be a good place for a Gardenweb field trip but it seems like it is in the middle of nowhere.

Arcy, I believe what you have posted is stoneware and not bone china. The glaze on some older stoneware may contain lead, not just the ornamentation, and it’s wise to test all older dishes.

Can confirm. It is frustrating ... when you want to sell, it is worth peanuts. When you want to buy something discontinued, it costs as much as equivalent new and often more.

I wanted to add to my Mom's silver but the prices were crazy. I bought new Le Sabre Paris and I love it. I'm having friends over for dinner and just set the table with it. Reminded me I want some serving pieces.

It seems the business model is, buy very very low, and some of the stuff will sit in a warehouse forever costing you money and some you will end up not selling at all, so anything you do sell has to be very profitable.

PS I also got some new placemats from Target. Wanted them last year and they sold out. My others are rectangle and don't work well on my round outdoor table.

I sold some Pottery Barn dishes on a local FB site several years ago and got an OK price for them. Another set I was going to send to Replacements, but had rhe same experience with a low offering. These days it costs so much to mail anything heavy, I would hesitate to do that.

Mtn, I did that with silver, especially serving pieces and fill-in items, many years ago via eBay. I had a mix of what my mother had and a good deal I had found on place settings at one time. Back in those days you could find a few bargains but not so sure it’s that way now. Keep looking.

It’s a harder search, but estate sales will have a good price, because the goal is just to sell, not necessarily make a huge profit off everything. I have seen china and silver for great prices. But unless it’s a pattern someone is looking for, it may not sell. Or someone doesn’t want the whole set, just some of it.

Yes, i agree that estate sales would be better; really to some extent you are paying these other firms for not having to schlepp and source.

Yes of course, it is always buy low, sell high. But the difference between where you can sell something and what you would pay to buy it is called the "bid/ask spread." And in some cases, like this one, the bid/ask is so high that it really makes no sense to sell, and not much sense to buy either.

My mother in law would have won that game! My parents had that Franciscan Desert Rose for about sixty years. My oldest niece has it now. It always makes me smile as I have so many fond memories associated with meals eaten from those dishes.
