What does ”top cap. cap?” mean?

If the top of the wainscot projects 2.5”, the art placed as shown will look odd projecting 2.5” out from the wall.

I'm not quite sure how you got the artwork hung with such a big projection of the top rail of the waiscot. It looks a bit odd but I do like that you have lined up the top of the art with the tops of the windows.

I am not feeling the juxtaposition of old world molding and modern art. Did you put a cleat on the wall above the wainscotting? How else is the art not tipped?

I think it's an AI image, and not done yet. The OP is looking for advice on how to hang it.

I'd say find another spot for it. The trim work is very nice and doesn't need anything else on the walls. I also agree with arcy about the styles not working together.

Fabulous piece! I would hire a specialist. Perhaps a curator or carpenter to add a peice of wood from which to hang it. It will cause a shadow and you may not like that. Is there another wall for it?

Wrong place for the art for sure. Are all the walls wainscotted ? For me that wainscot is way too high and you seem to have a modern style with furniture so for me I would remove that trim or make it a chair rail height at most . Love the art so my heart tells me do what is needed for the art

It looks ok. These are personal choices and we don't all like the same things.

What I don't think suits the space at all are the floor lamps. Wrong style and wrong location.

Can you have a handyman or carperter cut out the 21/2”:top cap to accomodate your art so that it could be hung flat against the wall ? I i like a mix of modern / traditional . I disagree with the idea that art “has to go with” furnishings or style of the home. Much more interesting than a hotel lobby or staged model home look. But that’s me, ymmv.

Is your entire pic AI generated or just the art on the wainscot?

Have you measured to see if it will fit between crown molding and wainscot? It would look better in a place it fits than a place it doesn't fit.

I totally agree with K Laurence. I like the juxtaposition of the contemporary art with the traditional wainscoting and the placement of the art breaking the horizontal line. Just very interesting. I have picture frame paneling in my living room and have faced that challenge myself. However, my moulding isn't as deep as your cap. I think I would remove the cap just between the windows and replace it with similar but not as deep. Once painted out, I don't think the difference would be noticeable. The art will still hang proud of the wall, but not prohibitively.

Hi everybody. Im the OP. Different account (long story).

Thank you for the suggestions and feedback.

    1. None of the photo is AI.
    2. The cap on the wainscoting is 2.5” deep. The wainscoting is on 3 walls of this family room. The other wall is open to the kitchen.
    3. I made a wooden cleat out of 2x4 that stands out about 2 inches from the wall to hang it.

I’m definitely happier with it live in the room than in photos. I love the height of the wainscoting but it makes it almost impossible to put any real art on the walls at an acceptable height. I’ve been here 16 years and never hung art in this room for that reason. Until now.

Ok, here's another example of a question that is not clearly worded.

"Needed to hang a 4’ painting over 71” wainscoting with 2.5”cap. top cap. cap?"
So all the advice is presuming that you haven't hung it yet, and the photo is either AI or photoshopped. And you are asking how to hang it. Now you tell us that you've already hung it, the photo is what really exists, and you've already made a cleat to hang it from.

So what are you really asking???? Words matter, and facilitate communication. Or not.

And if you are not a native English speaker and find it difficult to express yourself in English, then there are Houzz sites in your country and you might ask the question in your native language.

I’m specifically asking exactly what I said in the post. “Do you think I hung it correctly?”
I got some great suggestions and feedback.

Im going to consider installing a narrower cap molding to make it sit more flush.

I actually like some of the other suggestions that were offered too. I’m going today to change out the lamps and love the different pillow options, which I will be shopping for.

I love Houzz for this. Thank you everyone.
