We're doing a master bath remodel and converting the tub to a shower. I want to use shower panels and avoid grout. I've had 2 contractors out. First one didn't say anything in particular about panels--just that they could install them. And didn't say anything abou the shower pan.

Second contractor went on about how he uses wedi for the shower pan and walls and how great it is. He mentioned Schluter as a competitor (which he said is also good), which I've heard of. It sounded like using this would really make sure there are no leaks.

So I asked contractor #1 how the pan is installed and how the panels are installed and they said the pan and panels are attached directly to the subfloor and the studs--and specifically said that behind the panels are studs and insulation. Then in the next sentence she said they follow the product's installation instructions so the process may vary but following the instructions should prevent any leaks. One caveat, the designer answered my email, not the contractor himself. So maybe she doesn't know?

Should I be worried that if water were to get between the panels or between the panels and pan, there's nothing behind it? Or should I be wondering if the other guy with the wedi board is just overkill and going to cost a lot more. I haven't gotten his estimate yet.

Also, any recommendations for panels? It seems like there are so many. I've looked at Onyx and Swanstone, but then the contractor mentioned brands I've never heard of, like Daltile and Eurostone and I'm wondering if those are the same type of thing.

Contractor #2 also said we might want to consider large format tile, which would minimize grout lines and I guess give us more choices. I'd prefer not to clean any grout lines and I think shower panels *should* be less expensive, but I think there are high end ones.
