Those little drill operated, tapered, screw type splitters, if that's what you're asking about, can be handy for small jobs like making kindling from smaller, already split, dry wood but they will only spread the wood pieces so far, so if it's tough or knotty wood, you'll soon find yourself looking for a larger splitter designed for those types of jobs.

I'm not saying there won't be times these small splitters will come in handy, for a variety of projects. But splitting stumps? Mabey a smaller poplar or ash that's well on it's way out.
