Yes, of course, their are other options which would provide better water protection. I actually installed other projects where we used the same countertop material to build up the cabinet so water wouldn't be an issue with the wood. See these other photos from my portfolio for examples.

Love this vanity, its chic yet functional --we wouldn't change a thing!
