First of all - Love your furniture except the bar stools - they don't go with the rest. I would put some wood boards on the ceiling between the beams - like in a Mid - century home. Or you can paint the ceiling a darker color. I would fill the window wall with some semi sheer draw drapes on a hospital track with folding zig zag heading on the drapes.This is where you can add some texture. Replace the ceiling fan with a chrome double propeller fan - very cool . Get a huge painting for the dining room wall that almost fills the wall - . Paint out the base of the kitchen island to the same color as the dining chairs . Find two chrome bar stools. Put matching floorlamps in the dining room - one in each corner.Take some of your colors from the rug ( doesn't show in photos ) to add the colors for some decor items - pillows - vases etc. Add a couple of faux fur pillows for some whimsy. I think you need to add to your TV wall - maybe some open shelves - more art .Move the TV unit a little to the left . And you need some more lighting. I can't see whats in the left side in the TV photo. If you are thinking of painting - then maybe a blueish grey. You can replace the red hanging shades at the kitchen for some frosted glass ones or add that red color with some red pillows or something in the living area. There I hope that helps you .

Love the architecture. The space has good lines to work with.

Ceiling fan - Remove completely unless you have a air-flow problem. It isn't located over either the table or the LR seating area so it just stands out as "not with" anything. Instead, an interesting (perhaps red, to pick up the color of the lights in the kitchen?) chandelier over the dining table. The torchier in the corner does nothing for the decor (I personally never liked them).

Ceiling: painting between the rafters with a darker shade of the same (if you like the tan) or whatever other color you decide on would give more architectural interest to the room. I like the tan, but grays or gray/taupes would go with your furniture and go well with red. I'd keep the walls paler to keep the space open.

Kitchen: I love the red lights! And is the edge of the opening also painted red? It could just be the lighting. lefty47 has the right idea: the bar stools don't go with it. When you can change that, stools in brushed stainless or even red enamel would work with your modern style. (You'll hate them if they're uncomfortable!) The first thing I thought of was -- red cabinets. Certainly paint the island base red to match the lights. It will add WOW factor. If you're not wedded to the red, then any color you love. If you're going to paint the room a different color than brown tones, that color of wood doesn't do anything for it. (Red cabinet base would reflect well with stainless bar stools.) You might want to rethink your kitchen, too.

The console beneath the TV is actually too small for the scale of the wall and the room. A longer cabinet with a low profile and some detail that appeals to you would give the living room more balance. That would give you a "base" for art on the wall and some collectible items, books, etc. on its surface. Depends on how detailed you like your space.

I don't see any lamps or side tables. A new trend in European LR style is small tables instead of a monster coffeetable. PErhaps 3, not matching but in the same scale. However, Some lighting is required unless you sit in the dark at night with only the TV for light. It's possible that similar chandeliers for both dining and living areas would work. I'm iffy about that. That long console could support an interesting table lamp - mercury-washed silver base? black drums shade? The end of the sofa is a good place for a floor lamp.

Some colorful pillows -- patterned with red and black (every room should have something black -- and not the TV screen!). The furniture is a little "matchy" by being all the same color. A colorful throw, a patterned rug, even if subtle, will add interest.

That great dining room wall offers wonderful options for color. A big painting/a linear grouping of framed prints/wall-mounted sculpture - the options are endless. What's your taste? THe table would look "dressed" with an arrangements of candlesticks or a grouping of fat candles on a long lacquered (red?) tray.

COnsider changing the seat covers of the dining chairs to something colorful, perhaps the same fabric as the sofa pillows you're going to add.

Have fun! Trust your own taste. Be adventurous. It's only paint and fabric. Easy to change. (I painted my living room 3 times before I was happy with it!)

The blank wall in the dining room is crying out for a beautiful wallpaper! I think a vertical design, not a stripe but something woodsy and contemporary?

Thanks for your replies so far everyone! Sounds like the consensus so far is to get rid of the bar stools and replace it with something more contemporary with a red/chrome color scheme. I'll start looking around at some furniture stores.

lefty47: I thought about putting some drapes on the front windows but I would need an extremely long drape bar, not exactly sure what it's called, its the rod that the drapes hang from. The front area is 24' from wall to wall and the window wall meets in the middle at an angle. Also there's another set of smaller windows above each of the big ones. There's only room to hang drapes from the area in the middle of the two windows so if drapes were to be hung, the top windows would still be exposed. I took photos so hopefully you can see what I'm trying to explain.

lefty47 and inkwitch: I want to replace the ceiling fan with some kind of light fixture but I think i'm very limited in my options because of the ceiling beams. The fan is currently attached to the heavier white wood beam where the electrical box is. Any light fixture would have to have a small base to hang down. Also the ceiling rises on both sides and meets higher int he middle, would that be a vaulted ceiling, not sure. I don't think I can mount anything on the smaller wood panels. I'm using that torchiere floor lamp until I can change out the fan because there are no other lights there.

inkwitch: Yes, the exposed kitchen walls are that red color, I thought it looked nice with the red lights. There isn't too much I can change about the kitchen right now.

I was thinking about buying a sofa table to place right behind the sofa to put some decorative items or pictures or I could buy a table to place along the wall behind the dining table. Having both might make the area to cramped.

There isn't too much space between the walls and the sofa/chairs so I didn't buy any end tables. I do need some kind of light closer to the tv area. That whole area is very dark, because outside the kitchen there aren't many lights. I didn't buy a coffee table because sometimes I like to just lie on the rug there, maybe the smaller type of coffee tables would work.

There is another hanging light fixture behind the two single chairs in an area that I have no idea what I can do with. Both the ceiling fan and the hanging light fixture were already there when I moved in. Right now, there's just a bunch of junk there that I have to clean up. Yes, there is a fireplace back there behind all that stuff.

Inkwitch: the console underneath the tv has the tv speaker on it right now. It will also hold any future bluray players or electrical items I buy for the tv, unless I can sell that piece, I'm stuck with it.

I need to buy some framed items for the wall behind the dining table, just haven't had time to really browse for it and I have to decide if I'm going to buy a table for that wall too.

OK - now I see from the new pictures we need to have a rethink . First point - the drapes - yes you can do drapes - you will need TWO 12' rods- they don't have to connect in the middle to make one . you just put them as close as you can to the center angle - no finials - and you put them on the big header and don't worry about the angled windows above. I also see you already have wood between the beams. It was hard to see because your walls are the same color. Concider the bluey grey I said before.The biggest problem I see now is the room arrangement. The TV is the problem . The big wall is where your sofa should be centered on and the TV can be where the sofa is now on a free standing low modern room divider ( try Ikea ) .Then you have room for a side table on each end of the sofa w/ lamps and angle one chair beside the fireplace and the other chair goes at the other end of the sofa with it's back to the window. Now there is room for a cool coffee table - if you want . Put a fabulous modern wall paper on the dining room wall with a long narrow console ( there might be room if you move the table out a little ) You only need 12 inches. Then there is a place for some lamps - maybe some glass shelves and art etc. Now get rid of the fan and replace that with a modern light weight hanging light fixture.If the elect box does not line up - a cord can be strung over to the proper place over your table.You can have a matching light fixture at the other connection in front of the fireplace . Now you have a big wall over the sofa for some art etc. I would put a long thin painting over the sofa ( almost as long as the sofa ) Hang it low - about 6 to 8 inches above the back of the sofa. The art can have some red in it to tie in with the kitchen and some other red accents around the room . Or find some other big interesting object for the wall . Well I think I've covered most of it now - I hope that gives you another view.

I think the red in the kitchen is too bossy a colour to be in that room off the dining and living room. I would replace the bar stools, the red pendants and paint out the island BM silver mink and the walls. Wallpaper on that big wall in dining room in a big graphic print but soft in colour to pull in the colours from the living room.
You could move in your furniture a bit, and put the console behind the sofa, that way it could be used as a sideboard for the dining room. Get a longer more industrial piece for under the TV. Add a lamp and stacked books to the left side of the new console to fill up that wall. Once those chairs move in a bit there will be room infront of the fireplace for 2 chairs facing each other and a table in between them.
Hang a large mirror on the dining room wall and a large canvas piece in the living room. Find a box frame table with wood top for the coffee table, a round table between the chairs and another lamp on the console behind the TV. add a tray to the console with wine glasses and decanter, maybe some picture frames.
I really feel strongly that the red needs to go, it is too strong of a colour to be the accent in that space. Hope this helps :)
