Do you need the curtains for privacy?

If so, I think I would do a few things:
1) get attractive shades (roman, wood, etc.) for privacy and light blocking and hang them just above the windows.
2) drape just one panel the curtains to the side on each window. Drape the left window to the left, the right window to the right, away from the center. Tie them to the sides with an attractive ribbon, rope, decorative hook attached to the wall, Etc.
3) hang the curtains higher on the wall, almost at the ceiling (this will make your walls look higher than they are)
4) get longer curtains panels that will go from floor to ceiling. This will make your windows and walls look taller and fuller, and your room more luxurious.

iamjudy has the right idea. This is a common problem and it raises the age old question of " Why the HECK did the builder do that?" Seriously, it confuses many people. Anyway, by adding two more panels to flank both sides of the windows you are giving the illusion of there being wall space in between. Believe it or not, most of us feel off balanced by looking at these windows, because it messes with our sense of symmetry. Also using longer drapes will make the windows look larger and the ceiling higher. Add a small chair a small round side table with a house plant and "BAM" a cozy cute corner.

Stick with the beige if that's what budget allows. The chocolate is going to really bring your eye to that corner of the room since your walls are white. The contrast will be too strong with darker drapes.

As to the question of why did the builder do that? Windows set right at the corner came into style in the 40s-60s and is a hallmark of the minimal traditional house that sets it apart from cottages and bungalows. It was a way to add light and interest into an otherwise plain boxy house, and it felt modern at the time.

Like a lot of building fads (double height open entries, clerestory windows, picture windows, huge master bedrooms, etc...) it was done more for looks than practicality. Once people got tired of them and found they were difficult to hang curtains on and arrange furniture near, they went out of style, although you still see them, especially in contemporary style homes and commercial buildings.

As a designer, I always recommend floor to ceiling curtains to my clients. If floor to ceiling are not an option, such as when you have a window behind a sofa), then shades would be the best option and NOT short curtains. I also think it's best to have each window with two panels.

First off, I'd paint the window trim the same color as your walls so that the 'eye' isn't drawn to the frames. And while I like the elegant effect given by iamjudy your windows are much smaller and will tend to look skimpy-architecturally. I'd just use roman shades with or without a coordinating cornice board.

You could have a very elegant office with a wall of long curtains behind the desk. And then I'd paint the walls with Benjamin Moore Palladium Blue.

Two panels at each window and long to the floor would look better.

I am wondering if you are going to be able to easily paint the window trim. It looks to me like it is a finish that might need to be sanded in order to be painted. Might want to check that out before you go much further.

Are the closet doors in the room the same colour as this window trim?

The window trim is a stained pine. Looks orangy/brown right now. See picture. Darker? lighter? Not sure what to do.

If you decide to paint the trim, be prepared to paint the baseboard too. I would leave it the color it is.
