If they're original I would keep them and ignore them in the sense that if you don't like green I don't think you should feel they are going to make you have to incorporate it somehow.

I like the fireplace because it is so unusual. See if you like it with a mesh screen in black. The green tiles might grow on you.

The fireplace is original,but the tiles are not. They look a little cheap in that fireplace . But I get it ! I will keep the same colour !

Lightening up the fireplace tile surround would give an incredible lift to the space. There are really beautiful "handcrafted" tiles that have a crackle finish that is rich looking while having a vintage feel.

The tile and color is pretty classic for style of the home. I would keep the tile the way it is and then embellish what you have. 1). Consider adding a medallion tile above center with a framed tile border. 2). Or what about a row of different relief handmade tiles or some type of listello (liner) relief border across the top, under the mantel. 3). Or another thought is to add a mosaic detail up each side. Of course, I would recommend having them glazed in coordinating or complimentary colors.

With any of this ideas, the tiles can be glued over top of tile with a two part epoxy adhesive which is heat proof once cured. I think adding a framed tile border would add interest and make it look like it was meant to be. Grout as needed.

I think if you were going to replace the tiles and they aren't original, you should seek out historic tile or historic tile replicas that might have been used in your house at the time. Do a little research on your home and get in contact with a local historic preservation society who can point you towards good resources for restoring the fireplace in keeping with your house. I love Victorians, congratulations on owning a gem of architecture!

Having hardwood flooring in front of the fireplace would relate better to your vintage tiles than wall-to-wall carpet.

Another vote for keeping the green tiles. The have a terrific relationship with the woodwork. :)

I would never replace those tiles. Whatever is to the right is what I would remove.

I don't know if the photo could be deceptive, but why do you think the tile is not original? I would be surprised if it had been replaced and is not original, but I don't have special knowledge about homes of that period. What is that molding thing around the fire box?

The beautiful and unique tile as shown in pictures offered by others may be quite expensive. I found a tile in a beautiful color that I wanted to use on a hearth (floor at FP...same size as in your picture.) One tile, no special tiles....straightforward I thought. The cost of the tile (not including installation) for less than 10 sq ft was nearly $500. On top of that you will need to find a tile installer that is willing to do a small, part-day job.

What are you going to do about that carpet and what must be wood floors under the carpet? What is that weird thing with the diamond pattern grille to the right of the fireplace?

The tiles are a lovely green and most likely original. Agree with previous comment that removing the carpeted floor would make the transition from fireplace to floor less jarring and you may find that you like the green better. Give it a try. Lots of people add green back into later fireplaces, it's a very classic look.

On the right of the fireplace is a old elevator (installed in 1928). I think that my issue with the fireplace tiles is mainly that green is my less favorite colour ...
I have to do some research to see if those tiles are original or not . I thought not but I could be wrong .
As for the carpet, that will be our spring project . We want to remove it and see if we can save the hard floor below . I do not know in what shape it is ...

I agree with everyone else who said keep the green tile. And, I agree with sbateman to replace wall to wall carpet instead with hardwood. There's probably some lovely hardwood, possibly parquet, underneath the carpet.
