Kitchen makeover!

12 years ago
Our 3 1/2 months kitchen remodel is complete! My goal was to create a classical warm inviting kitchen that was also light and airy. We love the new space. In addition to doing the kitchen, we replaced all ceilings on the first floor ( used to be popcorn), put crown molding in every room on first floor as well. We carried the new hardwood into the dining room and front hall way as well.

    Elizabeth, the new kitchen is fabulous. Love the Colonial Gold granite of course (LOL). It's amazing how different it looks with a different finish on the cabinets. Do you find yourself standing there saying, "I can't believe this is our kitchen?" Enjoy.

    This renovation is simply magnificent!!!

    Beautiful. Your kitchen has the same footprint of our kitchen and matches the design that we recently had done. It's great to see what our kitchen might look like one day (hopefully soon). Gorgeous! Enjoy it!

    Thank you all so much. My husband and I do love being in this kitchen now. We did the design on our own, so we are pretty proud. The original footprint was similar, but we did have to move a load bearing wall in order to make the island be able to accommodate stools.

    The cabinets aren't yellow, but they look like it in the last two pictures for some reason
  • 12 years ago
    We also went with white cabinets but a different floor... like your floor so much more!!

    I don't mean to be unkind, but while the basics of this kitchen remodel are very good (updating style, quality materials, brightening space, maximizing storage), it is colorless, dull, and without character. It needs some personality! Use stools, window covering, and accessories to make it unique and colorful.

    Looks great! I'm going on a year of a kitchen remodel, but we've slowly been doing everything (electrical and plumbing included) ourselves in our spare time!

    Stunning!!

    Love it! Thanks for the pic with the oven and refrigerator. I'm planning on the same layout later this month and it's nice to see it for real. What did you do for the pantry next to the refrig? Regular shelves or pullouts? How about the other cabinets on that wall?

    It looks really good, but might look better with a roman shade, as seen in the example Shea Joy posted. The brown blinds detract from all your improvements. :-)

    @sheajoy

    Kitchen was just finished a few days ago so I haven't picked out window coverings, stools, and accessories yet.

    @susan

    Pullouts on left side of fridge and all other bottom cabinets.

    Elizabeth, it is gorgeous! It is so light and area and spacious feeling. You are going to have so much fun picking out those last few details now that the hard work is done. The wood blind looks fine to me as it relates to the floor.

    Absolutely love it, Elizabeth. could you tell me what surface that is on the island and counters? (what marble, etc? )
    Thank you, and enjoy!!

    Beautiful! Love everything about your remodeled kitchen. Warm, inviting, and will bring you much pleasure. Must add that I love it even more because it reminds me of our own kitchen!

    @keekstart Elizabeth used Colonial Gold granite for her countertops. We used the same on our recent remodel (search New Kitchen from Hell to Heaven). Our cabinets are maple with chestnut stain/chocolate glaze. Granite looks good with both the stained and painted cabinets.

    @keekstart

    Counters and island is Colonial Gold granite.

    what a great job you did, really like your kitchen.

    thanks for the info, Kevin & Elizabeth

    Elizabeth, I love it even more everytime I see it. I know you thought long and hard about every detail. I'm so glad you have the light floors (this is from experience of living with both light AND darker wood). I also think it wise that you are NOT committed to any particular color or bossy granite and backsplash. You can always add interest as you see fit...as your mood or seasons change...or simply enjoy the tranquil elegance that you worked so hard to achieve. Let me just say this....this is a kitchen I would buy!

    omg that looks almost identical to my kitchen! :D CRAZIE!!!!

    Wonderful job Elizabeth .. you must be smiling every time you go in the room!

    Thank you so much for your kind words mkhodges. I must admit that I was feeling a bit deflated by one of the prior comments, but you picked me right back up again. You and I are on the same page. I need a space that I can be flexible with as I tend to like change every now and then. And sometimes, I just like to be in a calm serene place without much going on.

    It looks so beautiful, so nicely done.
    Very fresh clean I bet cooking will be fun in there.

    It does not look dull at all!

    Enjoy

    I love the cabs granite and the use of black in hardware and lighting. Also love the wood colored blinds. Good work. Enjoy!!
  • 12 years ago
    Stunning! The layout is exactly that of my cousin's kitchen. She wants to remodel and your design will really inspire her. Timeless. In addition to being beautiful, the floor will be so much more comfortable to live with. Enjoy!

    Now that most of the hard work is done, I'm going to use my new space to kick start my new year with some new green smoothies to get rid of the sugar and bad carbs that I devoured during this makeover! Stress is not a good food motivator!

    Very nicely done. Simple and elegant. What a wonderful transformation! Enjoy your new kitchen!!!
  • 12 years ago
    Even a green smoothie looks scrumptious sitting on such a pretty counter. Renovation is stressful, now you can relax and enjoy.
  • 12 years ago
    Hey - that green drink looks really good and it actually got me thinking about bringing in contrasting colors for accessories.
  • 12 years ago
    They're all very different - because I'm not sure where you're headed with your decorating but each of these pieces are so unique and have the power to transform the look of your room.

    Elizabeth. Love the granite in the picture, but that smoothie. . . YUCK! LOL
  • 12 years ago
    Love the before and after! Like other people have said, you've chosen beautiful and classic finishes and you can add a pop of personality elsewhere - love it!

    Also, how tedious was replacing all the ceilings to have a smooth surface? Was that more cost/time effective than scraping them?
  • 12 years ago
    @shal1217

    We hired people to rip out the old ceilings and replace with new Sheetrock. What a mess that was! I don't recommend doing the whole floor at the same time like we did. We opted to replace the ceilings rather than scrape because we installed 26 new recessed lighting cans where there was none before. I'm sure scraping would have been more cost effective, but we wanted our ceilings to be perfect.

    Gorgeous-I am saving to my idea book as this is the exact look I want in my kitchen!
