My suggestion would be to purchase a bed with storage beneath it and avoid buying a large piece, like an armoire, that will take up space that's not available. I would place the bed to the right of the window, a nightstand can be be placed just under the window and I'd put a pretty trunk or something else attractive at the foot of the bed since that's what you'll see when walk in the door.

A low dresser can be placed across from the bed with the tv on top (or mounted above) and that would leave plenty of space for a working area near the closet.

If you're wanting to replace the doors, you could always hang a curtain rod in the opening and either buy a curtain panel(s) or use a favorite tapestry to add some texture to the space.

Of course using lighter colors and larger patterns will open up the space as well. Good luck!

It's not a bad space. I would place the bed to the right of the window as you look into the room, lengthways down the right hand wall. It would be good to have a bed with a headboard. A side table could then be placed under the window. This could be a small desk if you really needed a desk in the bedroom. I would suggest not having a desk in the bedroom at all, the bedroom should just be for sleeping. The cupboard looks like a good space and maybe you could build in some drawers at the bottoms and smaller cupboards for neater storage. To save some space you could remove the cupboard doors and replace with a curtain, to also add some colour to the room. The TV could be wall mounted on the right hand wall just past the door opening to swing around to watch in bed.

Another suggestion would be to place the bed in the middle of the wall to the right as you're walking into the room. That leaves space for nightstands on both sides of the bed, the tv can be mounted on the wall opposite of the bed and a dresser can be placed on the wall with the window. However, this option does not allow for a work space...

One more suggestion would be to place the bed in the middle of the wall with the window, nighstands on both sides, a low dresser with tv mounted on the wall to the right of the bed or 2 tallboys placed side by side on the wall to the ride. Opposite that wall is where your work area can be.

The room is big enough to add two twins, nightstand, bookcase, and small desk. I would place beds on left wall and place desk on same wall near window. Bookcase on opposite wall for storage.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I previously have tried placing the bed vertically flush against the right wall, and it does just barely fit. My only concern with this placement is that it's not going to allow me to get a traditional bed frame which isn't a dealbreaker by any means. I always could go with a nice headboard and do something to hide the metal frame. The vintage trunk idea could provide some storage as well as a nice design element that people would see right when they walked into the room.

I was planning on making the closet more efficiently organized by looking at the elfa line at the container store, but never thought of doing multiple drawers on the bottom rather than having to put an armoire that would take up space. Unfortunately I need to put a desk in my bedroom since I don't want to put it in the living room. Does anyone have experience with the ikea floating shelves?

Yea - I think this could be a possible solution. If I didn't want to go the custom route since that would be a fortune in Manhattan, I wonder if there would be any other cost effective solutions. Rather than doing a laminate top, I always could go to a lumber store and go that route for the top.

Does anyone think you could do something like this with the cabinets from ikea?

I'm wondering if you can hang the flat screen above your closet? Put your bed long ways as the room is in the middle. Then put the rug at the end of the bed but only put the end of it under your bed of course the rug side ways as it is

So I moved the bed in the direction that everyone suggested, and I think it definitely makes the room look better. After searching the site, one of the things that I was doing was making an accent wall with reclaimed wood behind the bed. I have exposed brick and industrial furniture in the living room so I think it could go with the rest of the apartment. I just need to figure out where I should put the dresser.

I was in Brooklyn at thrift shops today trying to find a steamer trunk to put at the foot of the bed, but I didn't see anything. Think I'm going to definitely do this since I plan on moving the dresser to the other side. Any suggestions are welcome!!
