MC kitchen re-model

HI! We are re-modeling our kitchen in our 1958 Ranch home.. I need ideas for a tight budget, trying to salvage some of the cabinets, but wanting more counterspace and to get rid of awkward corner. Thanks!

Not sure if you require the wall oven.

ok, don't know if you can tell, but my house had a double wall oven.......took it out, replaced the stove top with a slide-in oven and then added more countertop and larger cabinet below it for storage of pots and pans and an inside utensil drawer.

It also looks like you could extend your countertop over where the trash can is sitting now. You could always build out the underneath cabinet there as well and have your trash can hidden.

Thanks for the ideas... we are not diy'ers... two little kids allow for very little time! We will definitely be converting to a free standing/ stove and eliminating the wall oven. I'm not sure we would need the seating in the corner as we have a kitchen table right in front of peninsula. Adding counter to peninsula and including barstools. Thinking of moving fridge to left and somehow creating a pantry that is efficient without losing the window in the corner! I love natural light, esp. in a kitchen. Our budget is around 10K, trying to salvage our cabinet bases, but not sure it's reasonable.
    Thanks!

Are your cabinets built in place ("stick built") with no real wood backs or are they large boxes screwed to supports on the wall? The construction type determines whether you can move them easily.

By the way, the Ikea kitchen planner is very good. No need to buy Ikea cabinets, of course, just to use their online planner.

Have you checked out IKEA cabinets? They are pretty good looking and not outrageous. Looking at your counter top space to the left of the frig, I see why you need more work space. Have you thought about building shelving or a cab where the toaster oven is...? You could have a wall built up from the counter to hide part of the side of the frig, then house your microwave, toaster oven, canisters in that area stacked up. Then your left hand area would be free. But I would seriously drive to an IKEA and let the kitchen planning people help you with a new plan. I did not have the luxury of replacing my cabs and had to paint them, replace the hinges to European, so they were hidden and change the pulls. I am a DIYer though, and was on a very tight budget. If I hadn't been, I would def have gotten new cabs.

This is a great space with tons of potential. How long are you planning on staying in this home? Would your budget increase if you came up with a plan and waited a year or two to get it exactly where you want it? I don't mean to be a debbie downer, but here are some things to consider: Doing this space right the first time will help with resale value, but if you need it fixed now on the budget that you have then that is a trade off. What is your confidence level that when you start getting into the walls that you won't have any big surprises that affect your budget? Like rewiring for code? Flooring might be an issue as well, do you have some left over from when it was put in? I would map out the budget with the biggest items first. Decide what is most feasible between new cabinets or refinishing. Moving the fridge to the entrance of the kitchen will help with flow, it's the most active appliance. Could move the fridge to entrance then move all cabinetry/counter down to window? (move the memo center as well) The cabinet above the memo center looks to be the same size as the one over the cook top, you might be able to move it over there, over a new range w/ ovens. Center range so you have prep/landing space on either side of it. Would love to see a pic of peninsula and seating area. Take your time with this to get it to best suit your needs with your budget.

I vote for removing the wall oven and replacing the stove top with an oven. You can then place the fridge where the wall oven is. Then build cabinets all around the corner, you will gain tons of storage and counter space. And definitely check out IKEA cabinets, they are really affordable.
