If you home is Mid Century Modern that it would fit in perfectly. Other than that while I love old things that work and hate to see them thrown out, I cannot see it fitting in with modern decor as anything other than "something old that works". Also I believe that is how buyers will view it.

Thanks for answering. Our home is not mid-century modern. So I think it must go. The other issue is that we planned on re-doing the walls in 2 of the rooms where the components are but not having work done in the other 2 rooms. Will it be awkward to leave it?

I would leave it. Some buyers, like myself, would welcome a working unit like that. The new owners can always take it out, but once it's gone -- it's gone.

Have you checked with an electronics store to find out whether the existing space can be used for new equipment or whether the space where the wires run might be used to run new wiring for computer equipment or even an alarm system? You might check with the guys who know what's coming in the way of new gadgets and they might have some ideas what to suggest -- smart lights, smart thermostats, nanny cams ???

Disclaimer -- I am an old fogey with little knowledge of electronics other than what I see on TOH or HomeTime - so my comments should be considered with this in mind. I was just brainstorming because I hate to cut into walls to install stuff and would rather use pre-existing holes if possible. ;o)

I recently bought a home which was built in 1984. I has nearly the exact system! Everything works so I am very grateful the sellers left it alone. I would like to update the system to a digital lock stereo system that will not drift off station like this one can and does. I am still learning how to use the monitor/talk and other functions since unfortunately, THE OWNER'S MANUAL IS MISSING!!! I suggest, if at all possible, leave an operator's manual with the unit so the new owner is not in the dark like I currently am. I really would love to update to something 21st century though, any suggestions for new component?

I wanted to remove my 1990's era Audiotech model 460 (4-wire system) whole home intercom but it also functioned as the front doorbell. That is, in addition to being able to use the intercom system to converse room to room there was a entrance intercom with a doorbell button. When someone pushed the button, an electronic doorbell tone was sent to the main station and all the satellite room stations. So if I was going to remove the system I had to find a doorbell replacement. I decided to replace it with a video doorbell but I also wanted to utilize some of the satellite room stations as doorbell tone receivers.
