what would you do differently?

I would make it look more mid-century modern (which is my thing). Paint the wall a lighter color to contrast with the gorgeous ceiling instead of blending into it. I would replace the countertops with a solid color Formica and change out the bar chairs . Is the floor terrazzo?

A very open ended question. It appears this place is a loft, with probably great vistas. The cabinets appear to lean towards modern, so I would work with that. No need to replace cabinets or counter top. I would lighten up the wall color, remove carpet and replace with large format tile such as 36" x 36". I would also lighten up the wood plank ceiling and add more recessed lighting. Replace the bar chairs - to something that adds a "pop" in style and/or color. I would also add some very cool/eclectic pendent lights over the island.

I did not catch that if the floors are terrazzo - then bring the floor color into the walls and ceiling

Paint a lighter color; get some funky cool barstools & pendant lights; larger pieces of art.

Somehow, I would change things around where those 2 cabinet areas are to include a large table, chairs and modern chandelier.

Very cool space ... love all the windows!

I would like more contrast between the terrazzo and countertops and different wall color. I'd add a wine cooler too :)

I just looked at the pictures of the rest of the house, and they obviously have very different taste from mine. But, you asked! So, I agree that the angled island is a bit strange-looking; I would prefer a curved, boomerang shape. I personally really dislike stone floors and countertops, so that's why I suggested a change there. The floor sounds interesting...do you have a closeup? I wouldn't change the wood, because it gives a lot of warmth to balance out the floor. I would add vintage MCM light fixtures instead of recessed lighting, which would take away from the wood.

I would remove maroon everywhere, replacing with grey, sand, black

I do not have a close up, this photo is 16years old. and its just a washed out slab so all the rock in the concrete is exposed after it gets washed out.

New wall color; new bar stools, new modern pendant light over island that MAKES a statement. Done. And if the aggregate floor is not epoxy coated, do that.

    Flooring and wall color

Love the ceiling. I might do the cabinets in a darker wood and give them a natural look, and lighten the walls

Change the floor!!!! Also, lighten up the paint on the walls, new barstools, and add a table & chairs where that rug is now.

formica countertops? lol no thanks. I'm getting rid of mine. Whose bright idea was it to bring those back.

Update it. Can the floor be stained a nice earth tone. Paint the wall a neutral. Get new, modern stools, retire some of those vases, and invite some beautiful people.

Some things I really like about it. Has an island feel to it.

That dark terra cotta color on the walls and rugs isn't doing anything for me. The cabinets look really nice. I like the tan but not against the grey of the floors. The counter tops are nice but not with the cabinets.

Chairs at the counter - not those.

I don't know...the pictures are 16 years old? I think the design has held up pretty well over the years.

Whitewash the ceiling pale grey? Paint the walls a lighter colour, if you want rugs, the colours should be from the floor & stone. Modern stools, modern pendant lights, choose your decor on the countertops carefully, they seem to be cluttered. The large vase by the window does not flatter your room. If you are keeping the floors and cabinets, try to bring more sand, grey, bit of black in your fabrics & rugs.

Reverse the sink and stove top locations; then reverse the hinge on the fridge so it would open conveniently to the sink.

I think it is amazing. There is so much talk about timelessness, and to me this room is timeless and needs nothing. I would throw out the shag rug and get rid of a few tchotchkes, but I am ready to move in tomorrow. Well, not tomorrow because we are iced in, but real soon.

@diyher Formica, or any laminate counter top, is a very cost effective material. Some can't afford granite or solid surface tops. Manufacturers are coming out with some rather nice looking laminate. Plus, think about this, people are putting laminate floors down hand over fist, but they won't think about putting it on their counter tops? Plastic floors?
