I'm not a decorator, so these are just my personal preferences...hope they help a little. 1. I wouldn't have 2 different types of tile. I believe in continuity. To me, replacing just part of the tile with another type would look, as you said, too broken up. 2. I would never paint custom cabinets. Especially ones as pretty as yours. 3. If you're going to put in new hardwood, I would take up the old so it all matches. I wouldn't go too dark, it shows every particle of dust. Also wide plank, to me, is a more rustic look and your house is traditional. I'd go with 3 1/4". (Oak floors never go out style. They're timeless.) 4. You didn't mention this, but looking at your dining room, I think a large area rug under the table would break up the large expanse of tile a little. Maybe a style something like your foyer rug would be pretty. Even though you feel the tile was a mistake, I personally wouldn't rip it all out. The expense aside, I just wouldn't want to deal with such a huge project.

Caroln242: Thank you for your ideas:). I would not put two different tiles either. I would either put wood down everywhere (even kitchen) or replace tile in kitchen and have wood in family room, living room, dining room, foyer (plus den/master, which are off the living room). I agree with the rug under dining table.
I goofed when i said wood in entry, foyer, living and den, meant to also say dining room...all but kitchen which could be new lighter color tile/stone.

Right now, there is just too much 'red' and orange going on, is difficult to decorate with fabrics etc.

OK, so if given choice of:
A. Put new tile in kitchen, put wood down other places.
B. Put engineered wood down everywhere and if so, would the 'all wood' be too boring and dark?
C. swap out the tile with a more neutral color, but this choice leaves the broken up area in the living room, which is currently carpet and not sure I want tile in living room.

kcarty1, did you ever come to a conclusion/solution? I am dealing with very similar issues, multiple angles, multiple flooirng, and a kitchen that is mostly orange...I am considering painting the cabinets white/off white as well, or staining them very dark/espresso.

I would love to see any photos showing the direction you went and if you would do anything differently.

We carry a variety of beautiful handcrafted White Oak, Hickory, Alder and Black Walnut wood flooring. I would suggest putting in engineered flooring throughout (even in kitchen area) to get a consistent flow throughout your home. You can always get your installers to add a tongue&groove flooring glue between the joints in high traffic and wet areas. Take a look at our page and our website for some ideas. Since the flooring takes up the majority of your home, you could always pick something to work well with your current furniture since you already have a beautiful kitchen. Mark617- I decided to go with glue down engineered 5 inch wide hand scraped hickory everywhere and though I love the look of the floors, the kitchen is just too dark and too much wood for me. I still dream of painting the cabinets.

I still miss the feel of the wood subfloor under my bare feet but the look works in other areas of my house. If I knew a top notch cabinet painter, I would paint the cabinets creamy white for contrast. Still nervous though as hubby cooks with curry powder which scares me with white cabinets.

Wow, the floors look amazing and I agree with the seamless look, it is nice!!! I completely understand the desire to paint the cabinets and provide contrast...seems like all of the latest trends are wood floors with white/offwhite cabinets. But, I also get the hesitation, either way, your floors look fantastic. Thanks for posting the update and the photos!!!!

kcarty1...I just wanted to let you know I made the leap of faith to paint the cabinets (I was educated, it's actually a spray lacquer, not paint)...I was nervous but found someone who does all the work himself and had close to 100 excellent reviews online here in Orlando. I have attached some photos of how mine turned out, keep in mind my back splash is gone (that is torn up drywall you see), no hardware back on yet and the floors and counters are being replaced next (dark hardwood and Alaskan white granite). Anyway, good luck to you, but wanted to let you know, I am glad I did it!!! I will post more pics when everything is done.
