Need help with bathroom lighting situation.

Hi all. I basically have no clue on remodeling... so perhaps you can help me.
I want to get a new light fixture for my bathroom. This picture is the current situation... the lightbulbs and gold are straight out of 1980. I want to do something more modern.
I was wondering----do I have to put in a light fixture with 8 different bulbs/sconces/ etc? I didn't know if I could put in a fixture that doesn't have 8 different sections. Does that make sense? Thank you!
