I think that you have found a great idea to break up the flatness of your house!

You may want to redo your landscaping afterward and widen the beds so they do not run in a straight line across the house, but swing out and have interesting plantings.

Before really looking, my instinct was please don't mess to much with the lovely simplicity of the house. But I really think a similar porch to the one you show could work, covering the two windows closest to the door. I think you should then change the door to a more formal design. But if you don't love the idea, don't do it. There is a Shaker-style simplicity and functionality to your facade that is lovely in itself. The simplest possible little extension over the door to protect people from rain would work very well. I'd suggest a bit of landscaping work, but again, keep to simplicity of design to maintain the particular charm of the house.

Really love the porch idea and adding a winding walkway from the driveway to the front door would look great (see photo below of a project by Cornerstone Hardscapes)

Thank you for everyones comments - I want to do some kind of porch or entry way simple because I do not want to take away from the design of the house. This porch idea I found my husband and I both agree on it. Right now we have the circle driveway that is actually going to be just grass soon come spring we are taking the driveway out (ya) and adding a brick walkway to the door. I wouldnt mind getting rid of the flowerbed we have and doing something different with it, we know a good landscaper that is reasonable so Im sure he'll have some ideas. But our main focus is first the porch - PS we have a door sitting ready to go in our basement that is a traditional door painted dark red to go with the siding.

Before you go for it I would just question if you are going to use something that expensive to install. You look like you live in an area where an all weather porch would serve you better. I do like the idea of a larger entry and definitely suggest work with your landscape. You can actually add a lot of texture with plant material versus just grass.

The other picture you show has a gambrel (barn style) roof and yours is a gabled roof with dormers. I don't think the style of porch roof on that house will work on yours. Something smaller might work, similar to this.

I disagree Kevin. I think it would work. I suppose the only one that can really tell you how/if this would work on your house Ashley, would be a professional that comes to your house and advises you for your specific house and needs.

Hi Ashley - I really like your idea and think it is the update that your house needs. Currently, there really isn't any transitional space from the outdoors into your home. Providing a nice sitting porch on the front your house is a nice welcoming element to your home and provides you with another "room" that you can sit on - effectively expanding the size of your home. Take a look at this project I did a few years ago where the entire design strategy was based on this simple idea. Smaller scale than your house but I think you could employ this strategy with success at a fairly economical price.

Hi, I agree with Kevin. I love the idea of adding a more predominant entry, but feel that the style an size of what you have selected is not the right fit for your existing roof line. Something smaller that will tie into the existing pitch f the dormers would look great. Similar to this photo.

As I see this thread develop, I believe that this is a perfect project scope to consult with a Houzz Pro in your area, for the following reasons: for a porch to be anything beyond decoration, it has to project a miinimum of 6' out from the existing building, and 8' frankly, is better, if you plan to place any tables where four or more people can sit, eat, play cards et al. It also needs to be wide enough to accommodate this activity aside from a clear sense of entry. Given the dormers cut into the main roof, I would suggest that there be a pitch break below the dormers, in order to properly flash and roof the joining of the new roof into the existing plane. This means the new roof is likely going to be built at a lower slope than the main roof. This may require that the roofing material is a standing seam metal, unless the slope can be maintained at a min. 4/12 slope. How wide should it be? How will you align the support columns and detail any soffits? Would you like a decorative rail along the outside edge? What will the decking material and steps be framed out of? There are many questions that are important to address in the design process, and it is very important to answer all these questions to ensure that your porch addition looks like it is part of the original build when completed, which is why I feel it is important to consult with a design professional first, to get an idea of what you want on paper, as your pro can concurrently verify that your project meets code reqs, then solicit prelim construction cost estimates, revise the concept if necessary, and then move the plan/permitting/construction process forward from there.
