I think you can use 2 different shades of the same color and still be able to define spaces without having a color showdown.

What colors are you already working with in your furniture? Any rugs, carpets in the house? Tile color?
Can you provide more info ?

I haven't purchased any furniture yet , im thinking expresso furniture . The tile has beige /peach and cream mixed no carpets . Would like to create a warm inviting atmosphere. Thank you for your response so far !

Before you even get to the paint colors - you need to have a plan and decide what you want for furniture. Start an idea file - Houzz is a good place to start. Look in furniture stores and ask the inhouse designer too get you started . Then once you get your style figured out then you find your colors for the walls from the sofa and drape fabrics . Painting is the last thing you decide on.

you could always try and do an accent wall so that the biggest or most continuous wall that connects the 2 spaces is one color and the other walls are another color-but have them only a few shades diff from one another

I agree with Lefty 47 Lynda...get your fabrics (furniture and curtains) in first if you can. We bought a home with WILD colors so I had to paint right away to be able to stand it, and I am usually pretty good with color selection...so we painted the house, but the couches I chose, and other items (lamp shades for instance) CLASH really bad with the paint colors. The paint colors themselves looked great until we brought in the other stuff, and when you are choosing a comfortable couch...you typically only have a select number of fabric choices. So try to get your textiles first, then paint. I am repainting now. :( My tans and khaki colors turned grey when I brought in gold/brown/olive colored couch and chairs...) Then pick a color out of your throw pillows, or from your curtain fabrics or a painting to help you select your color palette. It will all be more "pulled together." And those items will narrow down the million paint color choices. Good luck!

The house looks lovely! Before doing anything else, what I typically recommend to my clients is to start a 'look book" of pages from magazines and the internet that have colors and schemes that resonate. This will help you narrow down your personal style, and provide a nice guide for shopping.

Hi there! Choosing a warm tone that makes your white moldings pop and blends with the tile floor, cabinet tone and counters would be a good start. Although choosing fabrics and then working paint colors from there will also work, remember the tile floor, cabinets and counters are the most permanent things within eyeshot. A warm taupe or tan is also great with espresso furniture and should give you no trouble selecting accent tones for throw pillows and other accessories. The area rug will also help make a statement. Here is a warm space open to the kitchen, but full of warm vibrant color.
