I love this drum shade made from used coffee filters! http://tinyurl.com/coffeeshade

The low bench needs to be balanced with the higher backs of the chairs to me. A narrow console on the wall behind it or shelves perhaps? Something that takes the eye up.
I Like your furniture! Add window treatments besides (not covering the window but only the wall!) the window so it would look bigger. Add a lamp and a rug Thats it!

Here's my bench opposite side.... Ty for feedback & ideas :)

Sorry, forgot pic in last post.

I voted for the wood orb on your lighting poll. Post links to this discussion on your other discussions. You will get more responses. People are not reading this discussion from the beginning and are posting things that you have already answered and things you have already decided on :) Oh, and put the bench on the side where you and your hubby can see the tv. :))

    Love your dining set!

Also, when you do purchase things, add them to the room. When you are happy with something and where it is located, please let people know that. Or ignore them! Don't let comments confuse you or make you doubt yourself! :)

It's a real splurge, but the Quorum Ashford wooden chandelier really would help warm up your space and be the focal point of the room. It also goes with almost any decorating choices. There's probably a less expensive version out there that will give you a similar feel. Good luck!

Paintings, wall sculptures, corner pieces and a colorful light base on your room size would promote more appeal. Antiques integrated with contemporary also.

That window is screaming for floor to ceiling draperies!
It looks like the room opens up to an adjacent room on the side of the table where you have the chair. If that's the case, flip the bench and the chair. The back of the chair is a visual barrier. You definitely need an area rug and a window treatment. A linear light fixture would be great.

I agree on the floor to ceiling drape concept! Neutral fabric, once again. I am not loving the wood orb. I do LOVE the post with the bench on the other side. Can you see the balance? What a difference those small actions make. The photo you posted does reflect the floor differently and yes, I can now see how the walls and the floors are similar in color. Good match. This is difficult with photos. I still love the idea of pulling the paint onto the angle and when you do the drapes suggest mounting the rod right below the angle and go out from the window at least a foot on each side. You will LOVE the optical illusion you would get with this.

I did a poll on 3 light fixtures Drum, Brown pendant and an Orb and the Wood brown pendant had the highest votes and I thought it clash w/ dining furniture any way my fave was the Orb which I thought it may not been a good pic anyway I'm going to repost once again and show u a better pic of a Bronze orb I like from Ballards design which will be the last PIC...

Just change the light and the chairs! You need less bulky chairs (like the ones Galilee Lighting suggested) but with wooded accents rather than metal. Oh and take off the tapestry from those bulky chairs :)
Sorry, my chunky chairs are new and not replacing them I just working on light fixture, rug, window treatment and decor... Thank you!!!

How about a woven jute rug (it will play off the rich tapestry of your chairs), a white or cream vase on the table and just get a longer chain for your light fixture to see if that helps. You could also add a cushion to your table bench. I like your current window treatments. Then you can play with art, etc.
The light will definitely tell the room what it will look like. Put a rug in the floor. Keep the chairs the same style and color. I wouldn't keep it all natural, but it depends on the house
  • 11 years ago
Depending on the length of the table, you might consider two or more fixtures. Also, softly lit sconces will blow out the walls. Make sure that any rug is large enough that the chairs won't be over the edge when pulling them out.

How are you doing a poll? I personally like the linear idea to match the continuity of the existing lines you have going on. Given what you are considering my vote is definitely for the bronze orb from Ballard. It does give the softness of the orb concept and has a bit of a linear feel in expressed continuity. Continue the bronze onto your window treatment rod and possibly retrofit the doorknob as well. If you place a console on the long wall ensure you match the hardware on that piece. Great progress. See you know what you love! The orb is perfect! It is just fun to talk it through!

Check out this rug, what a steal! Not sure if these are the colors that appeal to you but it may work. This site is a reasonable option for rugs as they are always posting a multitude of choices. I love your furniture.

adivra, I like the sconce idea, table is 60 in so 1 fixture is ok it's a small breakfast area, but for my dining area I'm looming towards something bigger. Ty

Denise Swartz-Keller, I did a poll yesterday, but was told to add to discussion since I received only 17 votes... Like your ideas :) Ty

Avery large area rug in a bold color. Make sure chairs sure on rug when sitting style table. Then lower new light to 36" above top of table. Go a rectangle lights something different. View Lamp Plus. And other on line diets should be half the size of table.
On Happy post above the 3rd rug she shows is nice you need 8x10. But so for none of the lights set right. Keep looking. Whatever you choose for a accent color use that for rug, and panels on windows. Try to stay way from brown you have enough.
Galilee lighting above shows a great light, the far right then the 3rd rug that happy shows would work. You need a big sort piece on back wall. Big and hang low.

Some Mirror Windows on the left wall may give the room a larger feeling, as well as reflect the new light fixture.
The light you like and hubby didn't. He's right not just price, but not style of casual table with woven chairs, go more casual.
This bros. Great idea on lights. Getting closer.
This bros you had me till you said blinds. Lol
  • 11 years ago
Love the lantern look for light. And a narrow console table on long wall with art that is posted above 3 in dark frames. 7" above top,of table and 2" apart.
Rather than panels on window go a roman shade since there is only one window. Use a print in your accent color.
What are colors of adjacent rooms? That would impact colors to choose for a rug.
I also love the Bronze Orb light you are looking at. I think it would look great in your space.

I would not do a jute rug. You already have the natural, organic feel in the chairs and it would be overkill. The sconces are not necessary in a small breakfast space. I would not spend the money. Excited to hear of your next step.

I had kind of the same problem when I bought this house back in September but my walls were kind of a christmas tree green with brick colored cabinets and black & grey granite counter tops with a greenish-turquoise cook-top island.. I painted the island almost black, a smokey black and painted the kitchen walls a white that the paint store matched from a 1940's jeweled coffee cup & saucer that I favor when I'm camping.. well, okay... glamping... Then I added bright custom painted pictures of italy (my name is hidden in a couple of them so it's fun when people realize and say "Hey the restaurant has your name on the door) and to pull it all together, my painter scripted in red, with grey shadowing the following all the way around the room: Dio non potrà mai chiudere una finestra senza prima aprire una serie di doppie porte .... Translation: God will never ever close a window without first opening a set of double doors.... When people walk in and ask what it says and I tell them, they love it and it makes them feel good... that's what kitchen / dining areas are for... making us feel united...

Bamboo shades would be good with your furniture and light choice.
Think the dark bamboo would be too dark in the area, perhaps a lighter bamboo or grass roman shades.
Might be too dark but it will mostly depend on the rug that's chosen.
I definitely like the bench on the side facing the door (I had a similar setup in my former home and my kids would sit on the bench to put on their shoes before going outside). I love the idea of either the lantern style or the drum shade chandelier above your table. Your current chandelier is way too high--should be 3-4 feet above the tabletop. Definitely need drapes on the window. I'd do candle or light sconces on the wall on either side of a grouping of mirrors, or one large mirror. Would also be a nice wall to hang decorative plates.

Here's the problem: there's a lot of dark furniture in the middle of a light room. You need to break it up. There are tons of ways to do that, some have already been suggested. Other idea a light colored table runner. Maybe a lighter colored cushions on the beach or chairs. Consider an outdoor fabric. Art on the walls? Window treatments and/or an area rug.

ok, ok, I have the best solution, Tech Lighting, or LBL lighting, Rail. It will allow you to add some spots for art work, and hang some pendants over the table all at the same time. You do not have to use the curve, you can go straight or create angle, the curve just adds some interest. Its a great room, and rail would be my first choice if I was consulting you.
