Can you explain the cabinet refinishing process.

Love the update! Great job. What kind of under cabinet lighting did you use?

PS. Love the countertops! Nice cool, light contrast to the dark cabinets.

@ lorijferris, there are many tutorials on youtube to google. But this was our process...first we removed all the doors and drawers and concentrated on the boxes (cabinet framing). We sanded them with an orbital sander on the flat surfaces then used a citrus stripper on the grooves that we couldn't sand. Then after wiping the sand dust off and remaining stripper, we first put one coat of hickory gel stain (followed directions on can). Once we wiped and allowed to dry we applied the java gel stain. This stain was applied very heavily (almost painted on), then using a rag, with a very light hand, was wiped off just enough to allow for some of the hickory stain to show through. After this dried thoroughly, I applied 2 coats of polyurethane. Next the drawers and doors were down using the same process. This was a very time consuming and laborious process, but well worth it!! :)

@ sbrustein, unfortunately the older cabinet wasn't wide enough. We had to custom build a new one in its place... :)

It's interesting that you defied the recent trend to paint wood cabinets white or cream and instead went with a darker stain. I must admit , I like the dark cabinets with light counters better than the reverse.

You painted the wall too, that made such a big difference. What is the color of the wall and the trim?

Also you got rid of the plastic plants on top of the cabinets ! hooray. New kitchen is stunning.

I'm considering a similar project as we have a lot of cabinets. Would you be willing to share what this project cost you?

@ coltsneck, refinishing the cabinets were the least expensive since we did them ourselves. But of course, they took the longest time to sand, stain and polyurethane. With our DIY expertise, we probably spent $20,000. That number includes new SS appliances, under cabinet lighting, subway tile backsplash with supplies, granite countertops, paint, new cabinet moldings, etc.
