My shady landscaping needs a facelift!

My landscaping is stuck in the '90s, and I have too much shade to boot. Need ground cover that can tolerate Dallas heat, dogs, and shade. Mature shrubs have outgrown raised flower beds or been thinned over time as trees grew and blocked shade. Entry way shrubs were removed to accommodate foundation repair leaving blank areas adjacent mature shrubs. Pool waterfall feature has fallen apart, and the "restoration" work by a supposed mason is falling apart.

We have basically the same problem (to much shade in the back yard). We would like grass but w/out removing those trees it isn't going to happen. So now, i'm looking into hardscaping ideas, that is, using rocks or whatever else that is not alive and using ferns. https://www.houzz.com/magazine/ferns-a-shade-gardeners-best-friend-stsetivw-vs~30347495

For the best bet though, ask questions at your local nursery as best plant(s) to plant in your locale in a shady idea. For our shady rock wall, she suggested ivy. So, we brought what she had. 3 years later....still surviving and looking good. In the warm months, if i notice some brown leaves i pluck them off.

You might want to try some succulents for groundcover. Actually a bit of them do well in the shady. Not sure which zone you are in but here in So Cal I like to use Sedum tetractinum. Here is a link to it on Monrovia's website.
