sorry two of the photos are sideways! They looked right on my computer...

Please let us know how you will be using the room. Family room, sitting room, watching television? Thanks

oh! Formal sitting room -- no TV.

Is it attached to dining and kitchen?

It's open to the kitchen (to the right). Thanks for asking-- this is my first time posting and I don't know what info is usually needed! My style is pretty traditional.

What colors do you like? What kind of feeling do you want when you walk into this room? Some would recommend with picking out a sofa and a couple of chairs you love, then find an area rug and fun art.

The room has beautiful bones. Since you're not going to put a tv in here.
Tape measure, bhg.com arrange a room program is a great place to start.
Are you going to paint.
Big area rug, sofa & couple of chairs, console table, beautiful oil painting.

I have plans to paint the room, but not right away...too tired from trying to get our current house all cleaned up! I'm open to color suggestions, furniture type, rug ideas, etc. I do not have a creative or visionary bone in my body, so the more help the better!

I have a similar room. I put a couch centered in front of he fireplace, put an ottoman as a coffee table. I.d the put two accent chaos angled to sit near the fireplace and facing the sofa. If there is room, put a sofa table/console table against the wall that is facing the kitchen. You can go to Haverts.com and design your room and play with furniture.

I like drapery panels hanging from very close to the ceiling. A large area rug with a sofa facing the fireplace. Two chairs facing one another on either side of the sofa. A large round coffee table or ottoman fully accessorized. A nice piece of artwork or architectural piece above the fireplace. A sofa table behind the sofa and a console on the far wall with two lamps and a nice bowl or tray in the center. A large mirror above the console and candle sconces on each side of the mirror. Pull down a color from the drapes onto pillows and a throw on the furniture. If you are in need of color help, let us know what the rest of your house colors are and I'm sure you will get many ideas.

1. Determine your budget.
2. Determine your family's needs. I saw a child in one of the photos. Do you have a room where children can play, or will this be a formal room that has to suit a variety of family functions, including play area and toy storage?
3. What are the measurements of the various areas. That will help you to determine the number and scale of furniture pieces needed. For example, do you want 6 or 8 dining chairs? Do you want the dining chairs to coordinate with the chairs at the bar area in the kitchen? Do you want sectional furniture, a sofa and chairs, two sofas, etc?
4. Here's a quiz to help determine your decorating style:
