We had a similar situation in our kitchen; the whole room looked better immediately we took them down.

I too think you will enjoy the view when you take them down. But I like them very much and hope that you can use them somewhere else. Maybe in another room?

Take them down! It will look so much better without them -- more open....Give them to your husband to use in an office space just for him. Then he will be happy too! Problem solved!

My husband and i remodeled a condo a few years back and took out the cabinets over a pass-through counter. This condo kitchen is NOT large, but taking down those cabinets so improved the the dining and kitchen area, that the space was not missed! Good luck!

I removed cabinets very similar to yours several years ago. The room was completely transformed and I certainly didn't regret it!

I think that the cabinets should come down. The kitchen will feel much larger.

Be careful now. I looked at another house and loved the open kitchen without those cabinets like ours that obscured the view. I awoke the next morning at 5:30 because I heard a rumbling sound. It was a power drill. My husband decided to take them down. I drank my coffee that morning enjoying the view. I guess he wasn't interested in moving. The old cabinets found another life in the laundry room.

If you don't need them for storage, take them down. It will make the area appear to much larger.

I would generally be inclined to take them down too, but please see the open display shelving I designed between the kitchen and dining areas of a client's great room. It might be a good solution for you to get both storage and/or decorative display, and a more open feeling for your space. Hope this helps.

I agree with most everyone else. I took mine down, and it made the kitchen and eating nook look and feel so much larger and appropriate for family interaction. You will have wall and ceiling repair to do if they come down.

I do see that if you take them down, you would have vacant space above the back splash where the wall cabinets abut the cabinets in question. It would be nice if you could possibly remake one section to fit that area so that the back splash is not just floating with no purpose. Or you could add some shelving to that area for a little display space.

If the glass doors are the same size (does not look like it in the attached photos) as your other cabinet doors, it might be nice to strategically replace some of the solid doors with the glass doors. That would add even more interest and open up solid banks of uppers.

You could even replace the wall cabinets with some of the ones you would be taking down, especially if your husband really likes the glass doors.

They are so pretty! Leave then and use them as a green house. Yes, I said green house. Take the inner shelves and place pretty plants. Rotate them once in a while.
If behind those dark curtains you have view of a garden, then during the day you could look through the shelves and outside and at night with even one light outside will also work. That will open the space, more than taking the cabinet. If you have the space and no a garden, you could make one.

Great advice from Connie Elaine's Draperies! Are those cabinets down yet?? Use them somewhere else if you can't replace some of the doors in your other cabinets with these glass front doors. They can be used in your laundry room or in a nice little home office for you and your husband.

They're down! Thank you all for the great advice. My husband is happy too! The glass doors don't fit any of the other doors. One of the cabinets does fit in the space that was left above the backsplash. I can't decide whether to put it there or some open shelves.

Wow - What a fantastic improvement, If you have other glass window shelves in your kitchen the extra cabinet over the splashback would look nice, It may look a bit lonely if it is the only style cupboard front like it in the kitchen. If you decide to go open shelves instead, corner shelves finish the end of real neat. Shown below in our kitchen - old but serves it purpose for now.

We did the same thing - An amazing improvement. Now, that lighting. Take the flat panels down and you will have a space in your ceiling that opens up. Paint it and put a new light fixture inside. It will look fantastic!

I think that one glass door cabinet in the empty space at the end wouldn't look good. You could use the cabinet without the door and perhaps line it with some nice wallpaper. Or else you could have some floating shelves.

They should go , it will totally open up the space. However, you should think about what you will see with them removed.

What a wonderful weekend accomplishment! It looks great, and I am glad you are happy with the decision.

Mrwillie, I took a tall table I found at the goodwill and painted and tiled it myself. I used 3 granite tiles so that I could use it to place hot pots on since my other counters are Corian. I found the metal shelving at Lowes and my husband installed those for extra storage. I does not get in the way whatsoever.

Another vote for taking them down. My parents did the same thing recently and it is amazing how more functional it makes their kitchen seem. Also give you a nice practical work space with no cabinets above your head.

Take them down! I hate cabinets, window supports, or anything else that makes me feel like I am wearing a baseball cap too low. It just interferes with the visual space.

I would replace that fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent lighting is not your kitchens friend. If you can't do recessed lighting because it can be pricey tearing up your ceiling then find a large updated ceiling mount. They give off plenty of light and look at additional lighting for over sink and other areas you may need more lighting. Fluorescent is not forgiving it makes every imperfection show and does not make the kitchen feel warm and inviting.

Some of these topics just seem to take on a life of their own. It's three years later and I hope those cabinets are long gone!
