If possible, I would see if you can switch out the TV for a flatscreen you can mount on the wall above the fireplace. It might make it a bit easier to arrange your furniture when you have that single focal point in the room.

I'd definitely lighten up the walls to something a bit more neutral, and find some draperies and a nice curtain rod to make those windows a bit more cozy.

The rug does look a little smaller for the space, but I think if you bring the furniture away from the walls a bit that may help with that as well.

I agree with mounting the TV above the fireplace. Your rug will look large enough if you create a seating area ON it. Pull the sofa out from the wall and onto the rug, put a console table behind the sofa with some lamps for softer lighting. If you have some matching chairs that are a bit smaller than the ones you have in that room, you could put them across from the sofa. Put a rectangular coffee table in between the sofa and chairs, and an accent table perhaps between the 2 chairs with a light? A console table with wall art or a mirror would look nice on the wall where the 2 chairs are now. You could add in antique/ distressed decor as you find it.....

Hi haleyrikard, some neutral blue / gray wall colors would make the space feel calmer.

Try changing the wall color to something lighter. Pale greens, blues or beige.

Try Behr paint in Smokey Slate 406E-3. It's similar to Ralph Laurens "Faded Silk" green. Colors that go well with this are brown bag browns (like the color of the brown bag you pack lunch in) and pure whites.

You have a great open window space with lots of natural light coming in and it would be good to add to that airy feel by draping floor to ceiling white sheer drapes all along that way.

You have to pull the furniture in, you can't have it spaced out like that. Change the carpet to something more simple, something beige or stripes for added interest.

I would also suggest wainscoting, painting the wainscot white, while the top part be the pale green color. OR, paint the wall with the fireplace with large horizontal stripes (white and that pale green) as an accent wall, and paint the rest of the walls the pale green. The large horizontal stripes will give a sort of nautical feel.

I would suggest 2 sofas and two armchairs. One sofa in front of the window, and the other directly opposite. The two armchairs should sit side by side facing the fire place with a small table only slightly separating the armchairs. Keep the sofa against the windows AWAY from the windows. You can add a sofa table between the window and sofa and decorate the sofa table with fake books and other accessories. If the sofas are too large for your space, then go for 2 love seats. Let the sofas be one color and the arm chairs another. Place an ottoman in the center of the space. Something functional and simple. I've added pics to help you visualize.

I forgot to add, remove the TV from that corner. You can add a corner book case there or a regular book case that faces the room at an angle.

Simple rug, and sofa tables. One between the window and sofa, the other could be against the wall that's opposite the window with a large mirror right above to reflect the lights coming in through the windows that are opposite.

Nothing says country farmhouse like white slipcovered furniture and distressed wood.

I keep going back to the wall color, Bleeker Beige by Benjamin Moore. I just do not want anything with yellow undertones. (I am sure you all can see why!!) Any other suggestions?

Try moving the couch opposite the fireplace closer to the fireplace and add a coffee table. Maybe add a sofa table and lamp. Should always try to avoid lining your furniture against the walls.

I agree to move the couch opposite the fireplace and on to the carpet. It's really blocking that beautiful window/door.

If it's in the budget, I'd get rid of the mis-matched chairs and buy a matching pair and put them ON the carpet on either side of the carpet in front of the fireplace facing the couch.

A coffee table of substantial weight to balance the heavy sofa would close the room in a bit and make it a cozier space.

I also agree to put the tv, if it must stay in the room, above the fireplace, tho it seems to be a bit high and out of proportion.

To the left of the fireplace, a large plant would look lovely and thrive, or if it's in the budget, a vintage or new cabinet with some black framed art work on the wall above it would balance out the fireplace.

The floor tone seems very orange in the picture. A pale cool wall colour in the historical palette in the green/blue family would help tone that down.

Personally I like the current wall color, but rearrange the furniture. Float the sofa opposite the fireplace, and put the chairs in front of the window or split them up (one on either side of the sofa). Add floor to ceiling draperies, throw pillows and a coffee table to complete the look.

The colors in the rug, furniture, and fireplace all work together, and work with the single more intense color the floor provides. What doesn't work is the second strong color of the wall, nor the too-white woodwork. As well, certainly if you'd like a calmer, more soothing feel, I'd like to see much simpler, "quieter" artwork.

I'd suggest pulling a wall color from the rug, perhaps a lovely mid-range grey-green (neutral, muted, NOT saturated!), and pulling the trim color from there as well -- that much softer ivory. If you can, a very gentle color on the ceiling would be lovely too. Don't forget in choosing a wall color that those reddish floors will cast red up on the walls ...

No way the TV on top of the fireplace, not only for aesthetics (one focal point per view), but because it would be a terribly uncomfortable viewing height (like first-row at the cinema!). Besides, your fireplace is already quite high ... Personally, I'd put a large, simple mirror with a deep bevel and call it a day.

Consider moving the TV opposite the fireplace (yes, a flat screen when it's in the budget) and perhaps putting the chairs in front of the triple windows rather than the sofa: they leave a bit more breathing room and show the window more. Same configuration you have now: small table in front of the middle window, chairs flanking either side, angled in, positioned on the left and right windows.

I think the room's got great potential and without much expenditure. Best of luck!

I am a fan of the color of the walls depending on what time of day the light hits the room and when it is used. I would put inexpensive cabinetry/shelving units, on both sides of the fireplace one of which could contain the television. This kind of cabinetry is easy to find on Craigslist or at thrift stores. You could store books and small collectables in the other cabinet. Paint the insides of the cabinets a contrasting color which you could then use as one of the accent colors in the room. It is also not difficult to install rope lighting in shelves and the glow of such lights is pleasant.

Then put the sofa in front of the firelplace/tv with a coffee table. If you need, another chair might sit on either side of the sofa. The two lounge chairs could be in front of the windows with some sort of side table between them and a lamp for reading. I do believe that you need a tree next to the windows,

You might also consider a beautiful light fixture where the fan is (I have seen some more attractive light/fan fixtures recently).

The rug is okay, but perhaps you might go with something livelier. Again, I have seem some great stuff at discount stores like Tuesday Morning. I say go with something that incorporates a lighter gold than the walls. You should probably find a more prominent accent color in the pillows and accessories as well. And yes, sheers for the windows would be nice.

Your artwork seems to be a bit of an afterthought, perhaps you might find somethings that are less predictable. The painting over the fireplace could easily be a large mirror, the paintings on the walls seem very lonely. Perhaps groups of pictures would be more interesting. Perhaps enlarged black and white family pictures would update the look of the space.

I am of the belief that white furniture is a part of a conspiracy inflicted upon us by the furniture industry. And unless you are going to sell, why go neurtral if you love color?

Pull the furniture away from the walls to create a cozy seating area with the fireplace as the focal point. The rug is beautiful, but it needs to connect with the furniture...place sofa and chairs over the rug so front legs overlap by a few inches. Turn the sofa to face the fireplace and perhaps the chairs could flank on either side. This is a very traditional look. You could add a console behind the sofa and leave room for a traffic flow around and through the room. Add a few more colors in your accessories--blues, etc. taken from the art work. Those could be in the form of pillows, throws, bowls/trays with books, organic items like stones, etc. Introduce texture.

Don't go with greys, too contemporary for a country feel. Pick up a warm khaki shade in the rug that works with the wood floor stain for your walls. Don't mount t.v. over the fireplace, it's too pretty for electonics. Move the large sofa across from the fireplace and pull it into the room a bit, not lined up along the wall. Put one chair facing in to the left of the fireplace and the other to the left of the sofa on the window wall. A large rustic looking square coffee table would tie the seating area together. No need to go buy a lot of new stuff-always my philosophy! I do staging and like to work with what the client has!
