We have an Olympic queen (66"). We got it when we got a custom bed frame second hand (teak, made in Indonesia). I'm not sure why the 66" width fell out of favor. It's wide enough for personal space but doesn't feel like we're swimming in it!

Strange how our viewpoints differ. I find that a king bed "done right" makes a small room look larger. Live in a tiny home (1400 sq. ft) and have had 2 kings and one single in my three bedroom "thumbelina" home. Recently changed one king to a queen (sick daughter and needed room for medical equipment) and the room really looks smaller. Doesn't really matter, I love my king sized bed. Of course, I love the occasional grandchild or dog. Even if you don't have them sleep with you, nothing like a movie or a cuddle. King sized beds are "family friendly". It is really good when you are mad at your spouse also (way to old for the couch). When I was single with no little kids, men or dogs, I just spread out my reading materials, projects,etc. Would have nothing else. Obviously, I am a nester.

@Mark, LOL... You could say that, but then they'll think you're awake, and sitting on your bed checking email, or reading a book.

If I ask where someone is, and they say, "On the bed." Then I assume they're awake. If I ask someone where they are and they say, "In the bed." Then I probably woke them up. :D

On that note, I think I will go to bed, on bed, in bedding, asleep.

Mark, some beds you sleep on and some you sleep in. Most Tempur-pedics and other foam style mattresses you sleep in. Traditional coils and latex you sleep on:)

We sleep on a Queen size bed which is perfect for us, the room and all the pretty bedding :-))

Have a tempurpedic queen. Could have easily fit king in new house but couldn't bear to part with queen bedding that I already had. Since then have added to bedding collection, so I guess it'll always be a queen!

King bed with a memory foam topper. It's pretty hard to get out of bed every morning because it's so comfy :)

We have an antique sleigh bed made of very dark wood and it looks rather gothic. It's only a double but we've been comfortable in it for many years now.

After almost 38 years of marriage and having gone from an antique full to a queen, I recently broke down and bought a hand-made king poster bed. I love the extra room, but I just can't get used to the proportions, that thing looks huge.

Mark, there is a definite difference between sleeping on or in a bed. You sleep ON it when you take a quick nap, then, you can hop off quickly and smooth the duvet. No one need ever know.

When you sleep IN the bed, you are under the covers, shades drawn and those in the house better know where you are and not make any noise.

We have two beds. DH tends to relive all the footballs he did not catch, overheads that went into the net, strike outs and, sometimes, he goes for a jog…all this in his sleep.

You park ON a bed, you sleep in the bedding parked on the bed with you. If I am on top of everything non-living on the bed, then I am 'on' the bed. If I have pulled anything non-living on the bed over any part of myself, making myself an integral part of whatever's there, then I'm IN bed. If you wake me up I usually will snarl something akin to 'I *was* unconscious' which means I'm still sleeping or trying to!

I have sheets from twins to kings, collected over years with an assortment of beds; and lately with rummage sale and thrift store additions. You see a sheet, I see a quilt back, etc; a lot are not for purpose intended. Spouse and I tend to use separate flat sheets, usually twins, on top the king fitted. No blanket hogging then! I hate being soundly asleep finally and he'd grab a fistful, roll over, and take everything off the top of me even if I was parked on it to prevent snatching....

You learn. Peace and harmony comes to those that do not disturb bedlumps that are attempting to hibernate.

For almost 25 years we slept on a full. About three years ago we went with a queen. It's amazing how much bigger it feels to us. When we go somewhere and have to sleep on a full it seems crowded now.

King... and I couldn't imagine going to anything smaller. We've been spoiled. :-)

We have a 'super-king' size (as it's called here in the UK), almost same size as an US king.

Hubby and I don't share a duvet, we have two on the bed, one for each of us. Apparently, I totally hog the duvet! He spent about 1 year at the beginning of our relationship sleeping mostly uncovered, because I would not relinquish the duvet once I've got myself in it. He used to call me "sausage roll", the monster!
The solution was to buy a bigger bed and another duvet, and so we did. I'm still sausage rolling but not in his duvet! (and they lived happily ever after....)

California King, but next bed will be a King so I do not have to order bedding on line.

King in our place in Bangkok, Asian (metric) double in Hong Kong, and now back in Canada I have all these mattresses from earlier places (we also ran a B&B for a while)!

The King is now in a character suite. The western doubles in other suites. We sleep on an Asian double with drawers underneath--a storage solution necessary in Hong Kong's small flats with no closets. We came to love the extra height it gave the bed (felt very European lodge) and the views because the bed was higher relative to the expanse of window. From 35 stories up, we had a breathtaking green view of mountains and post-typhoon torrents.

Clients from Russia were over the other night and were shocked at our relatively small bed (they asked me to design Kings and Queens for their main house). But, I say, the double keeps the couple in each others' space and I like that. What ever works--any size can be fit into a good design.

My partner and I have been sharing a twin bed for two years! We want to get an organic flame retardant-free bed but are overwhelmed by the contradictory information about flame retardant laws and the high prices. And there aren't stores anywhere by us where we could test out the models we're interested in. I'd love to see an article comparing some options.

We started with a double bed 42 years ago. Then years later bought a queen size & thought it was luxuriously large at the time. Now it feels small & wish a king size bed could fit into our small bedroom.

We have a king, but I think it's too big. I usually sleep on a small portion of the bed,,the rest is taken over by my husband. I could easily get a Queen, but given that all the bedding is King, we'll probably stick with this size.

Queen mattress on an Eastlake Victorian bed that's been in my family since it was new. Multiple generations conceived in it. We got longer side rails built for it (the originals were nothing special), topped it with plywood drilled with lots of big holes for ventilation, and laid a good foam mattress on top. It sticks out just a few inches over each side. I keep an electric mattress pad on top of the mattress, and a memory foam topper over that. Then sheets, pillows & a down comforter. I turn the bed warmer on in the wintertime about the time it gets dark, and getting in bed is as cosy as sliding into a warm bath. I turn off the mattress pad when I get in. Can't stand sleeping in the electric field! We don't heat the bedroom. When we're away from home, we often sleep in a double and once in a while in a twin. We wake up tangled together no matter which.

We have two queen beds. In two different rooms.

I have an old flat spring metal 48" bed. Plenty big for one, especially since I tend to sleep on one side only and my room is narrow. Does anyone know if they still sell that size and if it is available in foam? Would foam even work on flat spring?

PS, I'm in Canada.

lauren11, what?! Do you and your partner work different shifts? That's gotta be love. I haven't done that since college. ...and I guess that wasn't soooo bad, young love and all. :)
(We were brought to our room at the old Wayside Inn on our wedding night...no one told us that room #10 had twin beds, LOL!)

King here, often accommodating two adults, 170 lb. teenaged basketball player, and 100 lb. dog who thinks he's a vicious Chihuahua, all watching a movie, sports, Shark Tank, Columbo, Saturday Night Live, or "Thank You Notes" on Jimmy Fallon together. It's adjustable, so sometimes we break out the movie projector, put our heads back and feet up and watch a movie on the ceiling.

I have a queen Sleep Number - wouldn't have any other! It fits much better than the previous king sized bed I had.

We used to have a 9-foot, round waterbed! It looked like a huge donut without a hole. That was fun until the air ring that kept it from slipping off the platform had a slow leak and we had to keep the shop-vac next to it. I'd elbow hubby in the middle of the night when I'd wake to find the waterbed slipping off the platform and he'd have to hop up and top off the air ring. No, I wasn't lazy. I was eight months pregnant! Good times!

Love my king bed. I know my honey is out there if I want to make the trip (usually when I'm freezing!) Otherwise I enjoy the spacious and cool expanse of comfort on my side of tempurland. Perfect!

King in TX, Queen in FL and a Daybed in AZ because I don't like my King. I grew up in Africa sleeping on a cotton stuffed mattress, it was blissful.

I have a super king-thought it was a king at first-discovered that when putting first set of sheets on them and they didn't fit! It just happened to be what hubby bought as it is a beautiful set. It is really comfortable and I love it. At first had a lot of difficulty getting the right sized bedsheets etc, but now know exactly what I should ask for and where to buy them.

Expanded/Olympic queen size Sleep Number bed. It's six inches wider than a standard queen size bed. Love the size, but bed linen selection is limited.

We had a queen, but decided to buy a king because we have 2 small dogs and 3 cats who like to join us at night! So we bought the king, and now the dogs and cats just take up more space. Not sure it was the best investment....ethan allen frame and expensive mattress.

We sleep on a California King Chatham & Wells (firm) that we purchased ten years ago and still provides a fabulous night's sleep. Our cat sleeps on the bed, or wherever else she darn pleases -- and we finally got the pug comfortable in her own bed next to us on the floor. Now, I must admit that since I am "the princess and the pea" according to my husband, there are a couple of things I do to make the bed super snuggly. First, I added a two (three?) inch Temperpedic topper a couple of years ago. Second, the mattress pad we currently use has a top that has two inches of some kind of soft material that makes us feel like we are sleeping on clouds. In conclusion, the mattress itself is soft, but firm -- if that makes any sense after my description. Lastly, our linens are 800 count soft cotton in lovely colors to match our dreams. Works for us! Oh, I almost forgot! We have a Queen Temperpedic mattress in our RV, and it works just fine for a week or two.

I like my king mattress. It's enough space for us each to have our own space and for the dog to have his space.

When my dog passes on, no more pets in the bed though. I have to sleep in the middle. The dog is 13 years old.

My husband likes to flail his arms around in his sleep. We had a queen but I feared getting bruises while I slept so we upgraded to a king. It probably has saved our marriage.

Queen size right now. Just enough space for a slim couple. Love it.

By the way love the topic discussion about on or in lol, I love language, language origins and other languages and how they 'work'.

In bed generally means to be getting ready to sleep etc.. on bed means I am sitting on the bed as you would on a sofa. Having said that, the rule is generally never to end a sentence with a preposition, so the question would have been written instead this way: On which size bed do you sleep? But it was written in the normal, spoken way which we all do at times. Thus, size is the emphasis, and since you don't sleep in the ones illustrated, on would be appropriate :) Hope this helps.

We have a queen. I am not sure it makes a difference. Husband is a big guy, so to him maybe. no matter where i sleep i have 2 cats making me feel cramped, so it is always the size of a twin. Even though we downsized the dog from 55lb to 14. tehehe

King. We (my husband and I) started off in a king but it just seemed too close and hot. I overheat when I sleep, so having the separation between my husband and I really helps with the king. When we bought the mattress we moved our queen to the guest room. Plus we bought a temperature regulating (cooling) mattress. The king allows us to have our own space when we need it, but we can also get as close together as we want.

We have an emperor bed which is awesome! 6'6" by 6'6"! We can both starfish! Haha

Since this thread popped back up this morning, I'll update that king bed now accommodating two adults, a now 195lb 6'1" growing teenage bball player, a Great Pyrenees, and since last summer, an additional 55lb-and-gaining crazed Pyr/Huskie/Golden/Eskie/Lab mix puppy (puppymonkeybaby) to watch a movie, Brooklyn 99, etc. Not a square inch to spare, but cozy!

Alone in my Cal King using 4 of the 6 king size pillows ...waiting for the day my fiancee can join me :)

We have a King, husband is a restless sleeper and uses 3/4 of it (dog on floor). After four years of marriage, I would prefer to sleep in a Queen with my dog. The dog is larger than my husband but doesn't move around. Sad, but true.

Try an Emperor. Enough room for a restless person and a dog and you still have space. I have the same except my "dog" is my three year old who sneaks in every night! ;)

California King - so my husband's feet don't hang over the end, and because it is so roomy I don't wake up when he moves in the night.
