Yes, you can use different finishes and materials - but you don't want to be so divergent between spaces that you wind up with a sort of decorative theme-park...

Thanks for the input. I am planning on keeping with the modern theme in the kitchen, dining and 1/2 bath they are all close to each other. The LR and foyer I wanted to go a little more traditional. However, the LR and the kitchen and dining are open to each other.
