I am building a home and I have to decide which kind of insulation yo use. I need opinions on what to use. Spray foam? Fiberglass? Spray in insulation? Any other suggestions?

There are many factors to consider.

The first being what region you are building in. If you're located in one of those frozen cold regions (i.e Northern, NE, NW or the upper mid-west)) then the added protection (insulation and draft stopping) nature of a spayed expanding foam maybe your best bet.

The second consideration is the type of construction you plan on (i.e. framed construction, post and timber, concrete, block, etc., etc.). Insulation types are not a one size fits all conditions type element.

For the most efficiently thermal performance, the biggest bang for your buck, and long term benefits, I would suggest your consult a thermal expert in your area for recommendations. Insulation contractors are not necessarily system and performance experts.......they sell insulation and install it.

I am no expert but I think the spray on foam types would be ideal as they fill up every possible area when applying. Unless many more people reply, you can always google the different types and also find reviews.

I've googled and researched and there are pros and cons for everything. One contractor swears by the spray foam and another says its crap. That's why I am asking on here

Talk to a couple local insulation firms. When I was considering which type of insulation for a project, I met up with a recommended contractor and we went over the pros and cons of the various products and the needs of my project. We ended up using spray foam in only a few special areas due to cost considerations but would definitely use it in my own home.

Like most projects, you need both the right product and the right contractor. We had considered doing the insulation ourselves, but a local building inspector suggested that we call this contractor. His installed price was barely more than the price we were quoted for buying the materials and doing our own work.
