I can be repainted with white but will have to be primed with a good primer and painted with several coats of good paint to cover the black. Was there a miscommunication with the painter?

And, obviously, we are finished with the door installation. I still have to choose the hardware, kick plate, and doorbell. We are going to replace the front steps and add pavers on the walkway and driveway. I am hoping a wreath on the door and a couple of nice topiaries may help distract from all the black trim! Maybe even add new interior shutters so there will be a little more white in the scheme...dear me. Oh my. I am frantic!

I like it! Black that is. I really think once you add the kick plate and door hardware and all of the other accessories, you will love it!

Dear bluenan, I ordered the door unit and I'm thinking the trim was something I must have chosen but I just don't remember. The door came as one entire unit and I had to choose everything, I.e., the style and color of door, style and color of caming, etc. I don't remember the person asking all the questions actually asking me about a trim color. I can't imagine WHY I would have ordered BLACK TRIM! My husband did suggest that he would paint it for me but I'm worried it won't ever look like it "came like that".

I wouldn't panic, there's not that much to be repainted. It looks like you still have the finish molding to install around the door. Is it a factory paint finish or a poly-clad finish? If it's paint all your hubby has to do is paint everything but the door itself and it will look nice.

It appears that the black does match the shutters. This is very common, but not absolutely necessary. Entry doors are often used to introduce a 3rd accent color. A painted door is a vast improvement. However, black has a tendency to get very hot and could cause some problems. You definitely want to stay on top of any maintenance necessary. I would also use a large pronounced exterior trim around the door (painted to match the exterior cornice work). This will soften the contrast.

Thank you, njmomma. I'm happy to hear that I have at least ONE fan of the black. As you can see, the brick-mold trim hasn't been added yet...as soon as it is installed in the next several days, I will re-post a pic of the finished product. I'm thinking my door hardware may be in by then. Thanks again!

Give it some brushed nickel hardware, that will add some nice contrast.

Oh, thanks, bluenan...I appreciate the pics of the two black doors WITH WHITE TRIM, the first one being absolutely GORGEOUS! I love that one! The decor is perfect!

And, bluenan, the two ALL BLACK doors. I can see in the second pic that the brick-mold really does soften the look, as suggested by someone. I'm beginning to feel better already. :)

THANK YOU, Hyde Evans Designs! I am pleased to learn that the majority of opinions agree that BLACK is fine. I've decided to leave the trim black and then add a 4 or 6 inch brick mold to match the white trim already on our windows, etc. Then, brushed nickel hardware & kick plate, a couple of nice topiaries on either side of the door, a pretty welcome mat, maybe a wreath and I'll be one happy person! :)

I love the black trim and door! Don't change a thing! It looks very purposeful, versus default white trim. Add your hardware and it will be perfect.

Your front door looks amazing! I'm glad you had the courage to paint it all black. Your new hardware will give it the pop you need as well as proper foliage. Love the contrast against the white!

Thank you ALL so very much for your comments! I feel completely at ease with the door & trim ALL BLACK! As a matter of fact, I contacted our contractor and told him I'm happy with the black...no need to paint anything white. I am going to add a 4" wide brick-mold around the entire unit and it will be the same color as all the rest of our trim, i.e., windows, etc. I am sooooo excited and happy now. I will be able to sleep peacefully tonight! Again, thanks to ALL my fellow Houzzers! :)

I too love the black. With the accessories you mentioned I think you will love it too. Never judge your decorating process by just the first layer.

I am a fan of the black as well. It is a very elegant and is a traditional look. So, if you were looking for a more fun and colorful look. This is definitely not that look. You can always add a fun color to make the house stand out more. Maybe a lipstick red door!
