Send photos after the construction is completed. The mantel should harmonize with the room updates. Fireplace would look nice without a mantel, ask contractor about that now if you're interested.

What about a floating shelf (kinda of like the Lack shelves at Ikea), but perhaps with a great piece of chunky barn board. It would look rustic but contemporary.
I would also lower the mantel if you can (not sure how hot it would get if it was lowered)

Remove it. It really looks out of place. Hang a great and large piece of art or a mirror instead. I would also paint out the brass surround (if it is brass, hard to tell) using a high heat paint in a matte black finish. I am not sure what style or look you are going for with your renovation, but have you considered painting the brick white? That would be quite a transformation.

I have the same problem..Fireplace almost identical except I like contemporary..next year we want a gas insert..Husband likes the brick but ???

I agree with removing the mantel. Hang a nice piece of art in its place. I also recommend adding an eyeball light centered over the fireplace to light the artwork.
