We had our bstylehome contractor spray it for a smooth even finish in eggshell. It takes longer to prep the room, but the spraying goes really fast and looks great. You can probably rent a paint sprayer from a local hardware store if you'd like to do it yourself. Spray the ceiling first and the paint the walls with brush and roller after to save time. Then you won't have to tape off the walls when spraying the ceiling.

Thanks so much for your reply. I should have been more specific...I would like to paint it with color rather than leave it all white. The walls are a warm khaki color and the trim/moulding is white. Should I paint the ceiling a shade lighter than the walls, darker, use one color or two, etc.? I'm not looking for high drama, I just feel like the white ceiling looks a bit cold because the room is large. I also love the way you accessorized the dresser -- I am going to copy it as I don't want to use the large, matching mirror that came with my dresser 20 years ago! Thanks very much.

I would suggest maybe using the same color you used on the walls and see if the paint you got it from can cut the color 25 or 50% which will make it lighter and just add a real nice softness to the room. Also this is a great way to erase the meeting place of the wall and ceiling making the space seem larger.

Or you could do a nice darker color on the lip and slant of the ceiling and then leave the middle part of the ceiling white or do it in the same color of the walls.... that would be really cool and unique

On this project, there was crown moulding around the perimeter of the room so we decided to stop the color there. This particular space has a lower ceiling (less than 9 foot) in the rest of the space so we needed to keep the ceiling light to feel taller and more open like the first floor of this property.
If that is not the case in your project, then adding color could be an option. By painting a similar color to the walls the architecture doesn't always stand out as much as it could so try some swatches on the ceiling and walls before committing to the color scheme.
If your space feels large, than yes, by all means add some color to the ceiling as long as this room doesn't feel totally disconnected from the rest of the house. There are a lot of creams, taupes and ivories that would blend well with your trim and wall colors.
We placed several colors on the walls before choosing the wall, trim and ceiling colors for this project. I ended up choosing a more grey based tone for the trim - it was a surprise but it came out looking more like a lakeside retreat - perfect for this homeowner.

I just finished a home where the kitchen and master bedroom have the same ceilings. I tied in the wall color on the slant part of the ceiling to break up the large space. Also I special ordered raw engineered tongue and groove flooring and installed it on the flat ceiling. I painted it white satin, together these two applications cozied up the large space and brought out all the architecture details. If considered , the wood was purchased at a business called " Tiny Timbers ".
