You definitesly need to get some bright colors in there to add warmth to your room. Start with a nice area rug, add a coffee table, and end table with a lamp between the chair and couch, and get some art on the wall.

You could go with just about any colors as your current neutrals would go with everything. Find a rug you love and use that as a jumping off point, pulling colors from that to use around the room.

Hope this gets you started! I think that because you have white furniture, that the deep purple/red would stand out nicely and make a clean statement!

Bold rug large enough for the front legs of both sofas to sit on. Move the chair to the other side of the couches but keep the angle toward the fireplace. A clear cocktail table that will showcase the rug but not appear to bulk up the space between the couches. Small-scale side tables on the far side of the fireplace next to the sofas--not necessarily matching but similar in feature or material (both wood, one round one rectangle, or both round, but one is a cabinet and one is on legs, etc). If you choose a glass cocktail table surface avoid using glass again on the side tables. Check out Home Goods for awesome lamp choices--again, not matching, but complementary with the awesome rug you choose. If you intend to read make sure the wattage is supported. If this not a reading space then you can go with a lamp that adds ambient lighting as opposed to task lighting. You have such a gorgeous space to work with--this is going to come together easily.

The art is so personal--scour art fairs, talk to artists, and buy something that strikes you. You can't go wrong with something you love--and often the prices at art fairs can be very reasonable. Plus, you won't end up buying a random poster in some retail outlet that everyone else has. Perfect! Keep that mantle clutter free. It will allow you and your guests to focus on everything else in the room.

That rug is very pretty, but I think it's going to show every speck of dirt. I had a similar colored rug years ago that ended up looking hideous as it showed everything.

Go to a website associated with your city, or any city you're going to be visiting, and find out about their summer art fair schedule. I'm in Chicago, and we have several fairs from June thru September. Almost everything in my house is from a street fair created by an artist I met personally. So much more interesting than buying a framed piece at Cost Plus:) If you are a photographer, choose something fantastic of your own and spend the $$$ to have it professionally framed. Can't get much more personal than that!

I feel the entire room is being dragged down by the curtains. If you remove them and keep the shades, it will lift the entire space. Will the mirror fit over the mantel? If so, I would move it and put a larger rectangular piece over the couch to emphasize the length of the room.(opposite wall needs a montage of some kind, maybe a large piece in the middle with some smaller pieces on either side). Small end tables for lamps and to place drinks are key, and depending how much walking there is through the room, a long narrow coffee table between the couches. Light and lighting will make the room shine, in my opinion.

You need a rug with color and you need to pull a color out of the rug and get it on the walls.

Love the furniture! You have a lot of different neutrals, so I would start by finding some accessories that have those same neutrals in patterns. Then pick your favorite color and add it. I think a modern mint green would keep the calming feel the room already has. Then find a painting with the accent color plus some others to draw the eye. In terms of furniture, I like the idea of metallic pieces since the mirror brings that. Maybe some nesting tables grouped as a coffee table, though i agree that end tables and lamps will do a lot pf heavy lifting. Also add some personal things like books (unless you have those elsewhere). I also agree that you should lower the mirror (shouldn't be higher than tops of windows) and relocate the chair. I do like how you have the sofas facing though!!

Paint out the fireplace! It's too dark. The window coverings are too dark too.The couches need rearranging or move them closer together around a coffee table or large ottoman. You could put a couch table behind one and arrange collectibles and plants. The green would add interest. You could also arrange the sofas L-shaped if they would fit.Definitely a rug but it needs to extend from front legs to front legs of couches.Good luck with it all!! Have fun!!

Paint your walls navy, change out your window coverings to something white, create a more intimate conversation area by moving your sofa's closer together. Find a circular coffee table to offset all of the other straight lines of the room (windows, walls, fire place are all symmetrical to the center of the room). Choose a circular chandelier and hang above the circular coffee table. Add art, an area rug, and throw pillows that are solid blue, and various patterns with various shades of navy. (You can mix patterns as long as the patterns have a common color.). You should also choose one accent color such as yellow, red, or green. Incorporate one of those colors in your pillows, and/or art, and other accessories. Pottery Barn has lots of navy right now, so I would start there for your pillows and rug. Shop local art fairs for art that you like...if you don't find just the right things, perhaps find an artist you like and hire them to paint something with your color pallet! Hope you find these suggestions helpful.

I think you have a lovely start, I like everything in the room. Thinking perhaps you need a richer neutral on the walls, and would keep the decor neutral with different textures and some sparkle. Good luck!

The windows are the main problem. Paint the window trim white like the crown molding. Use white or light colored drapes and remove the shades completely. Your goal should be to make the windows "disappear".

Move the matching chair to a bedroom.

Scoot the sofas in toward each other about 24". Add a rug and bring in soft colors in your art. Try the mirror over the mantel. Glass coffee table to serve both sofas.

First time poster, I'll take a stab at it. The furniture is all wrong. They are too big, they need to be streamlined, they're too plush for all that wood in the room. The decor should be basic, if only you were to go for a Paul Mitchell ornamental and lush. I suggest you decide what your going for in color warmth and functionality. choose thinner furniture if a few pieces will make statement for your den. otherwise, inject the room with accenting side tables, candlabra, silver and brass, glass. it's still unclear what purpose the room has. does it need to versatile for a family with children or what. use high gloss finish fabrics in your curtains and include tie backs. end note, throw a blanket in their, it looks chilly.

-nice room
-get rid of lights above mantle and replace with nice painting or mirror
-beautiful crown molding you must accentuate so paint the walls something other than white so it stands out.
-get textured and colorful pillows for the nice neutral sofas (the goal being to tie in colors from walls, fireplaces and painting)
-replace drapes with something that blends into the wall paint better
-tie drapes to one side on the windows next to fireplace
-get a large textured vs patterned and a glass coffee table (good idea)

Nice furniture! Whatever color you use on the walls (white is fine but how about a deep toast or dark gray) use the same color floor to ceiling drapery panels (simple style!). The area rug should be large enough so that at least the front feet of the sofas should sit on the rug. Move the mirror above the fireplace, or keep it where it is and hang a large painting on the wall opposite. In the mirror's current place, it simply reflects a blank wall.

Place a coffee table between the sofas with a few accessories. Add end tables on at least one side of each sofa (at least between the sofa and arm chair), and add table lamps. On the other side, get floor lamps. Don't go matchy-matchy. Get coordinated fixtures, but not the same. Change the lamp shades on the sconces so light shows through.

Paint the walls! A different color than the sofa and chairs, maybe a darker neutral like navy or olive green. Let the white of the furniture pop with a color on the walls. Then go bold with throw pillows and a rug as previously recommended.

Before you do anything, you MUST first decide on the "look" that you are trying to achieve. Then find a rug that you love, and pull colors from that rug. Use the "look" and the colors for paint, art work, lamps, accessories, to toe everything together. The fireplace is too dark, and needs to be lightened up. The shades and the drapes are too dark and drag down the look of the room. The walls should be painted......too much like the color of the furniture. Use an oval coffee table.....everything is too square....you need some texture and color. An impressive tall plant would add some softness!

If you really want a white on white space, then you'll need to paint the window trim and FP. I think the sofas will pop against a rich deep color on the walls while the white paint needs to handle the trim and wood. What is your favorite rich deep color?

Dear all, thank you so much for taking the time and giving me so many amazing ideas and suggestions. Think the board has been unanimous in that i need some serious splash of color via decor, art and pillows. This is meant to be the "formal" living room :) Will certainly keep you all posted as i progress. Have since purchased a coffee table, yet to be delivered..pic attached. looking for round side tables now.

from the published photos I get the impression of a dark-ish room... so I would tend to make it much lighter with all future purchases and interventions. Also, not crowd it too much with too many objects because, as I see it, you already have "important" furniture and features in the room.
I don't know, maybe a pic taken in the daylight looks entirely different!
