Tips For "FIX A LEAK WEEK"

Last week was National “Fix A Leak Week” (Mar 17-23, 2014). It was created by the US EPA to increase a home's water efficiency by getting consumers to be proactive in checking their property for easily fixed water leaks.

The EPA states that household leaks account for approximately one trillion gallons of water wasted each year. But by simply fixing these common household leaks, homeowners could save up to 90 gallons of water a day and save approximately 10% on their water bill.

Leaky Faucet: Replace the washers and gaskets. Minerals cause these parts to wear out and cause dripping. In fact, one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year.

Toilets: Replace a worn flapper in tank. The rubber decays which can a toilet to “run” continually.

Showerhead: Re-secure showerhead to stem tightly using pipe tape and a wrench. Also, replace the “O” ring inside the showerhead.

Outdoor Leaks: Weather can damage garden hoses and dripper systems . Use pipe tape to re-secure hose connections or simply replace the hose if damaged. Dripper heads should be replaced too if broken or loose. For extensive irrigation leaks, hire a pro to help detect and fix those leaks.

TIP: It’s always a good idea to turn off water line before fixing water leaks.

Simple How-To instructions for these DIY fixes can all be found on Youtube. Additionally, the parts can all be purchased at your local hardware store.
